Quality yet budget training wheelsets - seeking advice

Postby marc2131 » Wed May 27, 2015 10:10 am

I am after some budget but good quality aluminum clincher training wheels to suit a modern 11-cog RD set up.
Mainly used for some training, rec rides and 85km hard rides to Sydney Waterfall area and back. I was thinking of something along the lines of a Fulcrum Quattro wheelset. However I notice Wiggle doesn't appear to stock them anymore (superceded?).
Appreciate any suggestions?

I recently picked up a pair of Fulcrum Quattro CX wheels second hand for ~150, very happy with them. Not lightweight by any scale but bulletproof - i hit a pothole descending at ~35km/h with no issue and at 85kg i would have buckled a few wheels there.

EDIT:: The only difference i know of between the Quattro and the Quattro CX is the sealed hubs.

A big issue here is - are they still rideable when a spoke goes? And how often does a spoke go? Should be less than once a year.

The Fulcrums are a pretty good bet. I ride the 3s, which are not really budget, but tick both boxes above. I've even raced them after breaking a spoke right at the start of the race. There's obviously a range below the 3s, less costly, heavier, but I've never heard of any issues with them. Only complaint is the double seating ridge for the tyres makes them a pain to change (until you get used to it).

RS80s are great. Training or racing. A little more money, but very versatile.
I ride several bicycles, but not at once.

I'm a big fan of my Aksiums. They've been able to take 11 speed for a while and you can often get a bargain on them, particularly older stock. My set are still straight from the box, have survived a front on crash into a car (no damage to the wheel at all at ~30km/h) with no issues and still going strong after about 15,000km. They're quite stiff, though they are a touch on the heavy side (1750 or 1800 or something in that ballpark).

The Fulcrum Racing 5s seem to get a good wrap as a hardy training wheelset too. Little bit lighter than the Quattros.

The Quattros don't seem to be superseded as such, but a newer version the 'Quattro LG' has propped up at a slightly higher price. I think it has an improved rim over the original version?

Wiggle also stock the Campagnolo Scirocco 35 for around the $300 mark which I understand to be essentially the same wheelset.

Pro Lite Bracciano A27's for me. Just a great, strong all round wheelset.

This sounds like my ideal wheel, assuming it follows the trend of LG meaning wider rims. The Quattros are supposed to be pretty bulletproof. I can't see any info about them apart from a listing on bike bug that seems to me a mash of cut and paste info from the old Quattro 35 and the 5LG...

That or a 3T Accelero 40 Pro...

I'd recommend the Bracciano A27HD as one option:

Yeah it's just on BikeBug's website I saw them. No listing on even Fulcrum's own website!

This morning I was offered on Facebook a set of Fulcrum PRC wheels for only $150.
Googled them but little to no direct info on this PRC model. It appears to have been built around 2011 or 2012. My concern is that it wouldn't fit my newer 11 speed cassette for the Ultegra Di2 system.
The seller claims the PRC requires a 1mm spacer which he insists means will accept a larger 11 cog set up.
Any comments on this?

Might need to ask someone in a bike shop and perhaps get the said spacer to see if it will fit.

Did you put 11sp cassette in to check it out? Don`t know of it. But there`s a review of a bike with PRC 11sp from April.

http://road.cc/content/review/148310-me ... -road-bike Scroll down to specs. If it won`t fit, try spacer to see if it fit.

Follow up to earlier discussions: Fulcrum Quattro LG officially breaks cover:
http://www.bikerumor.com/2015/07/13/ful ... ro-family/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Should be awesome if that claimed weight is realistic (and still good if the weight is as per the previous Quattro, which is actually about 1800g in the real world, but also claimed 1725...).

I recently bought a merida Ride that came with the Fulcrum PRS's. The online specs say that that are shod with - Fulcrum Racing 7. Seems like they are a 'special model' for Merida but probably 7's.

Not really budget, but if I had $1000+ to spend on a wheelset, and wanted something for racing and climbing, what would the suggestions be?

Dura Ace C24s? C50s?
Shamals?
Fulcrum Zeros?
Reynolds (which one?)?

I'd prefer something that won't fall apart if I train on them too. Prefer not to change brake pads every other day (so prefer non-carbon, although this is not essential).

Grateful for any advice, but in particular, very keen to hear if anyone thinks I should NOT get any of the wheelsets listed above.

2011/12 model is not 11-sp compatible; Shimano didn't go to 11 until '13-spec (late 2012 release). The requirement for a 1mm spacer is typical for fitting 105, Ultegra & Dura-Ace 10-sp. cassettes to a standard 8/9/10-sp. hub. 11-sp. compatibility dictates that for lesser cassettes a 1.85mm spacer is required, plus the 1mm spacer for the aforementioned cassettes.

Short version: No, these won't accept 11-sp. without work.
I had a thought, but it got run over as it crossed my mind.

I've been weighing this very question up for about 6 months now and am about to pull the trigger on the Dura Ace C24s.

The C50s cost twice as much and are probably a bit OTT for training for me.
