Tour de Mike

Postby mikesbytes » Mon Jul 23, 2007 6:32 pm

Ok, I've worked out the next 3 races for me;

Friday 27th July
Dunc Gray div 4 track racing. No idea what is going to happen, we shall see.

Saturday 4th August
Ride for Life Centennial Park top loop (12 laps). Open vetrans race. Will be racing against A grade riders, yes some of the vets are A grade and I'm also racing against elite females. Expecting an average speed of over 41kph, despite being a hill course. Strategy is to sit in for as long as I can. Goal is not to get big cramps and not to get lapped.

Saturday 11th August
Criterion Racing Heffron Park Club C. Strategy is to push hard from the beginning and break it apart.

Ah, but the thing about strategy's is that they can be changed on the fly

Well I clocked up 135k's today, was more than I wanted but hammering on the way out...kept a 33av on the way out,at the half way mark thought I may of over done it,no breakfast and no food...stopped at the garage at about 85km,2 protein bars and choc bars, only kept it down for 10k's then it all came back up :( .Suffered like a dog for the last 40k's but kept the average above 30.
Now only need to do that 4 or 5 more times before putting down some killer laps at hefron in a couple of weeks.

Results

Friday 27th July
Dunc Gray div 4 track racing

The first 3 div 4 races were broken up into smaller groups and the last race was all in + div 5 riders

Race 1
Scratch 10-12 laps (perhaps alchemist can remember how many laps. 15-20 riders
4th place.
I was a bit too far back when I kicked, but really pleased with the result.

Race 2
Scratch 3 laps 8 riders
6th place.
I simply ain't fast enough for such a short race.

Race 3
Scratch 12 laps. 15 - 20 riders
6th place.
Once again I was too far back to fight for it. My mistake was about 2/3rd's thru the race I should of moved myself further up, I had been riding high on the track and got stuck behind another rider that was doing the same, I should of gone even higher and gone around.

Race 4
15 laps, 8 of which were paced out by a div 1 rider, followed by 7 laps without being paced. 30 - 40 riders
2nd place.
For a while I was boxed in and eventually Tim my team mate, came up beside me and then let me out and I moved up, but towards the end I was way too far back, I ended up on the wheel of the same rider I got stuck behind on the previous race, but this time a gap developed on the inside and that rider and I went thru it and then moved up the track. On the last lap we went around the outside and went for it, but he was too strong for me and crossed the line about 3/4 of bike length in front of me.

Round 1 was a 10 lap scratch - I went out early and died

Round 2 was the sprint - I went out early (2nd place and a warning for me  )

Round 3 had the lead out from the Div 1 Rider I was off the back from the start and never got on.

Round 4 was the combine scratch - I went out early (starting to see a pattern) and died

Did you both manage to miss the Labradors?

Good on you both. Dammit, I'm thinking about the track season again now too. Nah, I'll just use Edwardstown for training.

I got 3 and 4 a bit mixed up, the result is correct but the races themselves are swapped.

Felt a bit stuffed training this morning. You don't do a lot of distance at the track but it sure takes it out of you.

Great effort Mike, grats.

'spose track tactics are way different from the road?

I would seem that position is more important on the track than on the road, because there is less room to move yourself up.

Rob, did you find any of yourself? Also there's some good ones of your mates, particularly Richard.

Saturday race is going to be a killer, there will be A grade riders and there's no where to hide when you have to go up the hill 12 times

According to the timetable, I need to average 38.1kph, which is no big deal on a flat course, but on a hill course....

Well that was embarrassing, as soon as I hit the main flat straight, there was a head wind and I suck in a head wind. Going up hill isn't a problem but head winds tend to get me. Result was that I was dropped at the beginning of the first lap. Not a good sign for next weeks assault on Heffron, where it is quite often windy. Anyway out by myself, I teamed up with another rider I sometimes train with from another club and we set off after a group in front of us, after about 4 laps we almost had them, George made the gap and I didn't, so I circulated slowly and got lapped on about lap 7, compared with lap 11 last year. Around lap 10, I lapped my fellow club member so I slowed down and cruised around with him.

Then I went off to find a hole to hide in.

Last April or so when I raced in the Sydney road racing championships, I was battling with riders who lapped me today. Oh well...

Winds have been picking up from around 8-9am in the last few days. Very nasty.

Fear not, at least you entered and raced. It's a nice course and the repeated climbs of that hill is brutal.
