Hang onto their wheels? Nope, we got blown away, their gap was around a minute to the rest of us :(

That's not too bad as 1 minute is less than a km over an hour so you still must have averaged 46+

OK it's not a race, but a gran fondo.
So shouldn't be here then... Though now Cycling Victoria is spruiking a Gran fondo 'race' in today's member email with the 'Australian Gran Fondo Championships'

With Cycling Australia selling out, if only VETs would offer CX and track racing I would jump ship! :x

Gran Fondos or Cylosportives are races though?

they're rides on courses that test your endurance/form in a way that is basically a race, but without the tactics. there's enough climbing that the results will sort themselves out in a way that avoids dangerous race manouevres. but they are races. if you want them to be.

Gran Fondo's / Cyclo's are races ... winning them is also a pretty big deal. If you don't want it to be a race call it a Randonnée ( or it's Italian equiv ) and don't have a mass start.

If you have a number pinned on you, it's a race :-)

Treating Gran Fondos as races is why we have morons doping to "win" them.

Gran Fondos are races... Go to any GF or cyclosportive in Europe and at the front it will be a pretty elite group.
And as in many countries the bigger ones are part of a series it wouldn't surprise me in the slightest that people dope to win them. A couple of years back someone got busted in a race ( proper race ) I was in. There weren't any pro contracts coming from wining that one :)

Not according to Wade who organised the Giro della Donna - "We don’t want to promote this event as a race nor do we plan it to evolve into one"

I know, hence the smiley. Interestingly, we were told the Fitz Challenge was not a race either, but out on the course all the signage said "Cycle Race In Progress". Certainly at the pointy end we had 16 guys pushing hard.
Even if the event is not officially a race, many people have their own personal goals, which might be an overall time, or a PB on some segment or climb. They're only racing themselves, but it's still a race.

Yet didn't everyone have numbers on that they got at the "race pack collection", didn't it have a mass start and weren't there prizes for the first hundred... sounds like a race to me  . Was there a podium?.
To be honest I know nothing about it apart from that... wrong side of the world

It seems promoted weirdly. They announce it one day before 24 hour presale and information is quite sparse. Can't seem to figure out how many laps it is etc.

But they are definitely are promoting it as a gran fondo race as if you win your age group you become the Australian gran fondo champion or something. Wonder if there is a Jersey to go with it.

I'd expect nothing less than green and gold bands for all the participants racers...

Fondos aren't a race.
They're just a bunch of people trying to go faster than each other, and trying to get to the end before everyone else :)

Anyway. As alluded to above ... the Australian grand Fondo Championships really does muddy the water.

Ah yes but they don't suffer from the same technical regulations as races.
As long as it is human powered and allowed to be ridden on the road it is fair game.

5kg bikes.
Funny bikes.
Optimised aero positions without regard to saddle/BB position, or bars in front of the front axle etc.
Fairings
Recumbents
Tricycles
Velomobiles
Tandems
Unicycles

Lots of possibilities to choose from.

Ok, a unicycle is unlikely to be the first to finish, but since it is a course with a number of laps it might be possible to get at least one lap in.

Cheers,

Cameron
