Cheap, easy & solid camera mount

Postby Nate » Wed Sep 30, 2009 8:15 pm

Started a new thread so its a little more searchable...

Here's the parts:
Image

#1 - bracing or strapping, from bunnings/hardware store, comes in 1m lengths & costs <$5
#2 - bolt, 1/4" x whatever length you need, for oversized bars 2" works well, you'll need it threaded the FULL length of the bolt
- a nut (or small length of tube), of any diameter that fits over the bolt easily, it doesnt have to be the correct thread
#3 - some wingnuts (1/4" of course) and a few washers

Method:
- wrap the strapping around the bar to find the correct length & how much you need
- take it off the bar & cut to length, or you can just bend it back & forward a few times & it breaks easily (can be done by hands, its thin stuff)
- drill holes slightly larger than 1/4" for the bolt, on oversized bars it matches up with the existing holes
- cut some inner tube & slide it over the strapping
- assemble as below!

The nut is there to allow it to be tightened a lot more evenly, instead of just the outer most side & the washers are there for the same reason.
Its incredibly strong, easy to remove the camera (<5secs), and could take a decent load.

Assembled:

Thanks for the how to Nate! Better then buying one on ebay as it's cheaper and quicker then though it may not look as good. I'll try that out!

Nice one MacGyver :D . What camera do you run?

Neat. I would remove more of the sharp edges from the strapping. Round it all off with a file. Hate to see your hand or arm sliced up if anything bad happened.

Well, thanks for this Nate. I've just rigged up the same mount. I found some old heat-shrink from my electronic hobby days to use instead of the inner tube to surround the metal strip.

Just waiting for the camera to arrive (same as yours - tomorrow according to the site I ordered it from).

Bad news - the camera case cracked under the continual load & vibration the other week :(
So i had to dodgy up a new mount.

Basically you just need an "L" bracket that you glue to the front of the camera & then attach to the "Mount de Nate".
I also put some screws through it - but that meant undoing the camera case & voiding the warranty etc...

Bummer Nate.

I'm about to change from 23mm to 28mm tyres on the commuter so I'll see how the mount and camera go to start with. How long have you been using the camera before it cracked up?

A couple of months i think - its just that the bolt only goes in about 15mm in the bottom - then there's another 80mm of weight above it, so plenty of leverage to eventually fatigue the mounting inside the case & make it eventually give way.

Here's a light-weight camera mount my brother put together from a soft drink bottle.

It's not the cheapest solution, but here's what I use to mount a video camera on my Surly Long Haul Trucker.

If it didn't bounce off on this ride, it's not going to.

One caution: make sure the 1/4 x 20 bolt you use is just the right length. If you make it too long, it'll punch right through the camera bottom. I've seen a lot of cameras ruined that way over the years.

A little update - the mount snapped this morning on the way in!
There was a clicky noise the last few days - couldnt locate it & it seems it was the mount.

It snapped at the point where the washers are pressing against the strap close to the handlebars - obvious as its the stress point.

So i'd recommend 2 layers of strap - or use a few more spacers (nuts) to reduce the angle the strap has to bend/flex at the bolt.

V2 just tested this morning - results speak for themselves!
I'll most likely try & do a few molds to see if i can make a couple of the mounts for others if needed

I've been meaning to make one of these ever since Nate started this thread but laziness soon put a stop to my ambitions.

Now my problem has been solved by the release of the Bike Pod - $12.48 from the UK with free postage.

Certainly looks more solid. :)

I didn't realise that was out there or would have sent my money in that direction, which I might still do if the Hama one turns out to be too flimsy.

ROFL - cheers M@ :)

blkmcs,
Generally the mounts that use a single bolt in the bottom of the camera are completely ineffective - you need to grip around the whole camera. They just can stop the shaking of a camera by holding it in one little point at the bottom.
Also the cameras need to be at a max of around 130g (hence the Kodak ZX1 is basically unusable - due to using AA batteries).

The other issue you need to be VERY careful with - the camera you're screwing into MUST MUST MUST have a metal frame - if you screw info a light weight plastic frame - SNAP (been there, done that), the continual flexing is just too much over time.
</potential advertisement>

There is an important downside - you must have a SPECIFIC camera for a "rigid mount" - around $100
