Bike Insurance

Postby ginz » Mon Nov 09, 2009 1:19 pm

Hi everyone

Does anyone have opinions about the bike insurer, Swann Insurance?

I've researched a few that specialise on bike insurance and Swann seem to be the best priced compared with others (Real Bike Insurance and Velosure), all of whom have similar PDS'.

Cheers

Real Bike and Velosure are the same mob, thus the similar PDS. The third choice is CycleCover, a modified home contents policy.

The state bicycle organisations often throw in third-party insurance as a member benefit. That can be used to fill holes in the PDS of other products.

All the PDSs are different and it's worthwhile creating a chart of the features and seeing which matters to you. For example, did the Swann PDS cover just the bike, or your injuries too?

None of the PDSs seem to include everything that's included in the comprehensive insurance you buy for your car.

Cause they had the best service, I don't ever go by price, although they are very competitive... it always comes down to service, I should be looked after if I'm going to spend money with them and they made it easy... so why not.

Oh and they covered everything, even the $80.00 carbon drink cages

I just added mine to my home contents as portable goods.
Added $2.15 a month to premium.

Definitely go with Real bike Insurance!
Had a personnel accident and was covered within a week!
They're very quick to respond to claims and the customer service is top notch.
The policy covers almost everything but third parties and is very strait forward to understand with no hidden surprises. Oh and it's so easy to apply online!

But not third party, so I ended up going with Velosure plus the third-party insurance with my BikeSA membership (I think BV is the same deal). Very pleasant and professional to deal with, even when they stuffed up my payments (I wanted to pay in a annual lump sum and they misunderstood). A bit more paperwork than the other choices, but doing that upfront rather than finding receipts years later when making a claim seems fair enough. Like you I'm a happy camper.

On Swann, they've long been an insurer of motorcycles. So it would be worthwhile mooching over to forums for that other form of two wheeled transport.

Hi Ginz, one point you may wish to pay particular attention to is the excess applied in the event of a claim. Some insurers out there have excesses for racing and carbon which are charged in addition to their standard excess. So whilst the initial premium outlay may look to be the best price wise this may not end up being the case if you have an accident whilst racing on your carbon bike!
As always, what is good for one person is not necessarily right for the next so you need to take into account your indivdual circumstances prior to choosing your policy. As a must, read the PDS of the policy which will detail in full the benefits provided by the policy before you purchase.
Cheers,
Sparkles

organisations such as Bicycle NSW, Bicycle VIC etc offer this cover under their membership - so why double up - you can only claim from one insurer.

Hi

Are they the same or is it that they are both part of Hollard Group?

Anyway, I got my insurance from HBF. Turned out a better product and price than the specialists.

I am with Cycle Cover and currently in the process of making a claim. I can update you on how things are going with the claim if you like.

I'm also with cycle cover for my home, contents and 2 bikes to 3k each.
My wife had a spill going down hill, her fault, and apart from $100 excess they paid for bike repairs, new helmet and bike specific clothing plus broken lights. They only requested emailed photos of the bike and clothing and a quote from the LBS. The cheque was sent a few days later, no questions asked.

I too have my bike as a 'Specified Portable Valuable' on my Home and Contents Policy with RACV. They informed me via phone that I am covered whilst I am riding as long as I am not racing. When I asked abount Around the Bay in a Day the person went and checked and stated that I was covered as it was a Recreational/Charity ride and not a race.

As far as Swann vs Velosure/Real Ins goes - I studied the PDS and found one distinct difference. One coverers full third party (property & personal) but NOT Personal Injury and the other covers full Personal Injury but NOT third party (property or personal). But I cannot remember which one at the moment - I have it written somewhere at home.

Thanks ginz. You saved me a search.

So given the above - an all encompassing solution would be to get Velosure/Real (to cover personal injury and your bike) and then a State based Organisation like Bicycle Victoria to get the accompanying third party aspect. That should tick all necessary insurance options.
