I was/am like you in that I found building up my riding is the way to go ... doing it gradually but steadily seems to work ... you get fitter, it feels good and so you do a bit more then a bit more. So well done and keep it up ... it will come together.

On the diet, I have found gradually changing it seems to work, at least for me. Each week I look to make a single change and to bed that change in place and then move to the next change. I find that if I try to make too bigger change, I just get overwhelmed and fall back to the bad old ways. My idea is to make permanent life long changes, hence the gradual approach.

Anyway hang in there, it will come about.

Oh, taking measurements helps too. Sometimes you may put on muscle but actually drop centimetres.

All the best

Don't worry about it - according to my scales I put on 1.5kg between Friday and Sunday, but lost it all again in the last 24 hours. And if your fitness is noticeably increasing, you are probably still building muscle.

Your weight will vary given your fluid (and fluid retention) and food intake. For example try weighing yourself before and after a meal. I tend to not "blame the scales" ... preferring to look at what I am doing ... it can be scary but.

One suggestion on a weight lifting forum I think it was, was to weigh yourself two or three times during the day so you could see the impact of your behavior during the day. I tried it and decided I didn't like what it was telling me :)

Original weight: 83kg
Today's Weight (kg): 80
Movement since last week (+ or - kg): 0
Target Weight (kg): 76

Although it looks like I've been stagnant over the last 3 weeks, the average weight has been coming down at about 300g a week. Since my scales don't offer any higher resolution than 1kg increments, I'm rounding to the nearest kg. So, with luck, next week should see me posting at 79kg once again.

Cheers,
Graeme

Original weight and waist: 80.2kg & 91cm
last week: 78.4kg & 91cm
this week: 77.8kg & 90cm
movement since last week: -0.6kg & -1cm
total movement to date: -2.4 & -1.0cm
Target weight: 70kg

Happy to have lost 600grams last week that's two weeks back to back - I only cycled 80kmbut did some gardening on Saturday and have been reasonably good with the diet.

Not feeling well this week - so many not get on the bike - so this week will be happy to stay under 78kgs!

I know the feeling too. One suggestion is to eat the low-calorie foods on your plate first, only moving to the "good stuff" when you've eaten the healthy food. You eat slowly, then stop eating when you feel full, hopefully leaving the fatty foods on your plate.

That's the plan, anyway .... ;)

Cheers,
Graeme

I think the other problem was not riding enough. :) Andrew's getting a bit close, so if I can't eat properly I'll have to find time to ride more.

Start - 96.0 kg
Current - 85.4
Total Loss - 10.6 kg

The loss is all from cycling - no diet change of much significance or any other exercise. Have done 1850km since the start of that graph, not counting distance on the trainer (once a week sprint intervals). Starting point was a completely sedentary lifestyle - no exercise with a office job. Joining a cycling club has helped a lot. Goal is about 80kg, though I have a healthy BMI already at this point.

This week -

Start - 96.0 kg
Current - 84.0
Loss this week - 1.4 kg (!)
Total Loss - 12.0 kg

Not sure how this happened this week. I lowered my distance (122km total + 1 trainer session) but upped the intensity of what I did do - particularly now I'm going to the Velodrome three nights a week.

Mate, its been amazing watching you waist away (dig my spelling ah!) over the last 4 months. You are now the same weight I was at the beginning of the year. 2 more months and you will be lighter than me.

Week 6 - Mon 24/3/08
Staring Weight (kg): 138.2
Today's Weight (kg): 136.9
Movement from last week (+ or - kg): -0.6kg
Target Weight (kg): 100
Total Lost (kg): 1.3kg
Distance ridden In the last week: 154km

Same distance as last week, but done in 3 rides rather then 6, need to get out more and get it up over 200km/week.

Weight is about the best I could expect, long weekend, going out and eating and drinking things I should have played havoc with it. I was surprised I lost anything being honest about it.

Week 12 2008

Forgive me father for I have binged  . It has been 2.5 weeks since my last weigh in.

Today's weigh in= 88.5kg's
Movement from 2 weeks ago= +1.6kg's
Starting weight= 96.5kg's
Total loss= 8kg's
Still to lose to reach goal=6.5kg's
Target Weight=82kg's

K's ridden= about 30 in 2 weeks

A business trip in freezing cold Germany and a wet Easter camping trip (including my birthday) as soon as I got back have conspired against me. Fatty fried German pork (yum) and then Easter chocolates plus eating to take away the boredom of camping in the rain  .

The road back to fitness and good eating habits starts again today. I really must concentrate in future to stop these blow outs around major holidays. It took me till late Feb to get back to pre Christmas weight.
The older I get, the better I was...

Loss this week - 0
Total Loss - 12.0 kg

I'm actually not disappointed with this weeks result. After losing 1.4 kg last week I think my body has balanced itself back to my normal weight loss rate. I have consistently been losing 600-700g a week, so this is back to average now. Training was identical to the previous week.

Ok, mileage was great, just need to sort out the diet a bit more now.

I'm eating decent food, I'm just eating too much of it at the moment.

Getting noticeably fitter though. going to need to start sorting out some cold weather gear if I'm going to stay with the commute to work though, Going to order some shoe covers and some full gloves today.
