LDR's housewarming ride!

Postby ldrcycles » Sat May 16, 2015 9:00 pm

So for those who weren't aware, i'm in the process of turning a snake/termite/goanna infested dairy into a house, and as it's coming along well it's time to think about a housewarming. The ride is actually smithstreet's idea, i was just going to sit around and take it easy for once :) .

At the moment the only thing set in concrete is that it will start at the Kin Kin pub and finish at my place, where i will hopefully have some beer brewed for the occasion along with all the bottles of wine i have somehow accumulated over the years in spite of not drinking wine. There will also be a pool table :) .

I haven't worked out a route yet, but there are hills in every direction, and my place is on a dirt road so there will definitely be at least that much gravel.

Possibly first weekend of July?

Got some good before, during and afters here. Just writing another post with more pics now :) .

OK i've got a rouch idea on course, from Kin Kin through Coondoo and Wolvi to Cedar Pocket, then out to the Mary Valley and back via Carter's Ridge. Fair bit of dirt and some solid climbs. I should be able to knock up a course map on Strava this evening.

Throw in as much dirt as you can Lachlan. ;)
Also, will there be a mandatory 'pre fuelling' session at the Kin Kin pub the night before?

There will also be a mandatory early morning alarm, which everyone is expected to sleep through, together with a pit stop at some multi-national grease emporium, including coke :D

Interested as long as it doesn't conflict with my wife's birthday and the Abby medieval banquet

PMSL, find_bruce wins the internet!

Got a route up on Strava, the first dirt sector is at 8km and there are 4 sectors all up. You would want some good fat tyres (the first sector was rough enough to rattle one of my brake cables out of the lever once) and really good brakes to deal with some very sketchy descents. In terms of climbing, the first climb would be pretty cruisy if it weren't very rough dirt, then there's a solid dirt climb with a really steep sealed pinch, the reverse of the much hyped Shadbolt Rd, Brooloo Gap (steep but short), Carter's Ridge (very long by Sunshine Coast standards and solid going), Coles Creek Rd (very steep) and finally the Kin Kin Range which is no big deal.

Sounds like a plan that, I'm thinking the weekend of July 4th and 5th. June 27/28 would probably work too.

Oh I forgot about the hills up there, Dr said no hill work till he gets my leg sorted. I could just sit under the shade of a tree and keep your home brew safe! [emoji56]

C'mon Dimma, don't start dragging out the excuses this early in the negotiations. Your bike will be fine. Just throw some 28's on and drop the psi a bit and you'll be fine.
I've got a mate with a Cervelo R3 Team (light frame with carbon steerer), that has done heaps of kms on VERY rough dirt roads and it's fine.

You could always bypass any really rough sections if you were that worried. :D

Just buy a cheap old steel bike and ride that Dimma, that's what I'll be riding.

You'd fit any of mine then, i'm 186 but ride a short top tube (56cm). You've got a choice of Dawes, Tarini or Mercier :) . I'll hopefully be on my "new" Abeni.

Hey Idry, I figured out how I can do the hills up there and now screw up my Knee anymore. You can hook up a tag along trailer behind you (needs to be big enough for an esky) and I can sit back and give you motivation (insert cattle prod pic here) and keep you focused on the task at hand!

Blame smithstreet, he's the one who said "suitably epic" when he suggested a housewarming ride  .
