2018 Handmade Bicycle Show in Melbourne

Postby AUbicycles » Thu Mar 29, 2018 6:52 pm

On April 27-29 at the Meat Market Melbourne, the Handmade Bicycle Show is being held (organiser is corporatecycling.cc)
Tickets are regular $30 (limited to 500) for the opening on Friday and $25 each day on Saturday and Sunday.

It is naturally Melbourne-centric and the experience is that it is a good day out with the opportunity to chat with the frame makers and enjoy beautiful bikes and gear. So yes, it has a generous entry fee but this is not for the whole family and not a regular bike show with bike brands just pushing their wares. It is really an event for passionate riders who appreciate the craft and can spend hours watching and talking bike.

Lots of pretty, pretty pictures at CyclingTips page 1 and page 2

Some more pictures in this thread

I particularly liked the 3D printed frame components.

Certainly some drool worthy pics inm the threds above.

At the TdU this year, saw a bunch of those Bastion bikes, and in the flesh, they looked sweet as. From an engineering point of view, one of the more exciting bikes I'd like to own, but lucky to be able to afford even a lug.

The paintjobs and lugwork on the Llewellyn bikes is outstanding

Heard a bloke interviewed on radio in Melbourne this week who bought a Bastion.
$22,000 of bike  Don't think I could slip that past the wife

I like how Llewellyn makes lugged stems, ties the modern into the rest of the frame

There were some nice bikes on display and it was good to be able to chat to some frame builders and understand their history and the work that goes in. Some are traditionalists welding steel, painting and assembling the bikes themselves while others are using new tech like carbon tubes joined with 3D printed titanium joints. And not everything was $22k fortunately.

The Bastion lugs are interesting: on the bike they look super bulky/heavy, but in the hand they're amazingly light weight. Plenty more optimisation possible on the internal mesh though.

I got into a nice argument with a friend about the Llewellyn stem; on the red and white bike I reckon the stem looked way too small atop the large head tube. Mind you that was the only visual jarring on that entire bike* so I'm being nitpicky.

(*OK, the Keywin pedals look awful too)

....
Bulky yes, but that's because they are a different colour to the rest of the frame, but no bulkier than any other tube junction on carbon bikes these days.

I loved the touch of using the spoke as a anti-cable rub device. Looked slick.

So a dude over at fixed.org.au is selling a $15000 'voucher' for a bike including fit from Bastion for $12000.
Hey. So my wife's sister won a Bastion roadbike. She doesnt ride bikes and doesnt like me enough to give it to me to go dirt jumping on it.

for sale is a full bike fit and bike.
its got Di2 and comes with a choice of Chris King, White ind. or Tune hubs and your choice of Envis or H+son rims.
basically whatever a $15,000 prize gets you.

shes asking for $12,000 which is fair.
So here's your chance to own a Bastion and save $3k. You won't be able to see it on fixed.org.au unless you're a member with trading access, so if you're interested PM me and I'll try to put you in touch with the seller.

I can't even afford the $3k let alone the $12k.

They are a sweet looking bike and I like what they have done to make it.

Yeah, if I spent that much on a bike it would have to pedal itself.

A friend got a bastion, the rear dropouts had his initials and there are other personal details. He said I could borrow it and while have a good track record looking after gear and not crashing, the risk and responsibility is there so I reluctantly declined.

The internal mesh of the bastion really makes sense, not to forget, these bikes also have their own visual identity as a result. Most bikes on the market really only differ (at a glance) because of their paint job and even a lot of custom bikes can appear, on first glance, as less unique that they actually are.
