Sounds like you had a battle but at least you seemed to generally have a clear route to take to navigate the whole bureaucratic process!?!
I had a mate who wanted to build an access road a few hundred metres long on his rural property because his c*nt of a neighbour suddenly decided that he'd revoke the existing access via an 'easement' over his property (and no-one lived on his property, it was completely unused). He faced a never-ending response of "not our jurisdiction (and we don't know for sure whose it is)" from the various governing bodies, but at the same time threatening him if he went ahead and built it anyway. In the end I think it took him about 3 years and tens of thousands of dollars, not including the cost of the road itself.

I had a similar experience (with a completely unrelated matter) in 2016 that ended up with having to apply to and represent myself at the Supreme Court. Compared to that 10 month nightmare, the ride approvals process is a walk in the park!tcdev wrote:He faced a never-ending response of "not our jurisdiction (and we don't know for sure whose it is)" from the various governing bodies, but at the same time threatening him if he went ahead and built it anyway.
Still just a bit too far out for certainty but at this stage it looks like there will be a high in the eastern Bight, meaning 25kmh South Easterlies. Here's hoping, that would be fantastic!

I decided this morning to have a good search on Google for Noel Wheeler of Cairns and see if I could find out any more about him. I very quickly found a Noel Wheeler in the News section on the Carpentaria Freemasons website, who looked to be the right age. A couple of phone calls confirmed that I was on the money, the bloke who set the record all those years ago is still alive and well at the age of 86, and would be delighted to have a chat about it!ldrcycles wrote: Eventually on 2nd August 1953, Noel Wheeler of Cairns recorded 2:24:24, an average speed on the then 62 mile (99.77km) course of 41.42kmh! On that ride he also broke the 50 mile record with a time of 1:55:45 (41.7kmh).
I'm in a bit of shock at the moment, I hadn't guessed he would still be alive, much less that I would be able to end up with his phone number!

A photo of him welcoming you at the finish would be special.
Good luck with it. It's cold wet and forecast hail here today. A good day to clean the bike.
I hope yours is suitably polished, cause clean & shiny bikes go faster.
Cheers,
Cameron

He said that Ivankovich (who attempted the record several times without success) refused to recognise Wheeler's record out of spite, saying that it wasn't official because he "probably used an alarm clock or something" .
My number one priority was finding out just what was involved in the terrific average speed he managed, and he was able to confirm that the road was all sealed even then, and he had a good tailwind. On the other hand, he used a SINGLE SPEED. He averaged 41.4kmh for 100kms on a bloody single speed!! Even nowadays that's extraordinary, but less than a week after the Korean War ended? They made them tough back then!
He's hoping to meet me at the finish, which would be brilliant, and he was full of encouragement. Just an all round lovely bloke.
The Innisfail Advocate and Cairns Post are keen on covering it (especially with the amazing history of the record) and I'm flat out getting things ready. I dropped the TT bike getting it out of my car last night and bent the derailleur hanger (fantastic timing ) but I should be able to get a replacement from the nearest Specialized dealer this morning.

He specifically said he used a freewheel so he could go faster with less effort on the downhills through Eudenangee Swamp (which is bypassed by the modern road), reckons he would have hit "40 or 50 mile an hour".singlespeedscott wrote:It was probably a fixed gear to, so no coasting. He would have been running standard drop bars with no aero aids what so ever as well. If he had all the mod cons I’m sure you could add 3 or 4 kmhr to his average.
I forgot to say too, he even remembered what gear he was running, "about 84 inch"! That's about a 47x15, or over 100rpm average cadence for the thick end of 2 and a half hours. It's really hammering home the point that even if I break the record, the 2 efforts aren't remotely comparable.
The weather forecasts are starting to firm up now, most likely a South-Easterly about 15kmh. I've found wind forecasts to be exceptionally unreliable, but the synoptic charts back it up, so it's unlikely to be substantially different from that.

Unfortunately a Spot tracker is well beyond my budget, but Mrs LDR will be updating the Facebook page at miriwinni, babinda, fishery falls, and gordonvale, with some live streaming where possible.oxonabike wrote:Will us Cairns locals be able to track you (live track?) or dot watch?
In rocky tonight after a seriously painful 500km drive with near constant roadworks/slow caravans and trucks.
Doing a ~50k group ride with my brother in the morning (forecast is 9 degrees, very nippy already), then up to Bowen for Thursday night. I had a nice call from the innisfail advocate this morning to arrange an interview up there on Saturday afternoon. The nerves are building up but I also feel pretty good.

Proper write up to come this evening, but despite the rain and headwind I beat the record by a minute and 57 seconds!
Hardest ride I've ever done.
