There's a great ride i've done often if you like a good climb . Starting from the rowing club at Penrith, up to Agnes Banks and then the Springwood Road with its very steep climb and then back on the GWH with a detour down the Old Bathurst Road.

I have no idea about coffee places though as i just tend to throw the bike in the car and drive home when i'm on my own but i'm sure there's something close by in Penrith.

Sounds like a great ride to me, I'd be keen to try it. I'm sure we can find coffee somewhere along the way :)

You lost me at the "like to climb" bit.

I'll sit this one out (so to speak) as you'd all have to wait far too long for me to get up that hill!

When i thought of that ride i did think it would make life hard for the recumbents as it's a fair old climb up the cliffs and for those that don't enjoy climbing it's a workout for the lungs and legs but i must admit to loving a good steep incline.

I'm more than happy to stay on the flat lands though if anyone comes up with an idea on the level ground. I can do the climbing anytime. It's a bit easier on the non retro Lynskey too. :D

Well, what is wrong with riding the blue mountains?! Granted there are hills, but we always wait for each other....

If you are tied up in August, perhaps we should do blue mountains for the September ride instead? That way you can't chicken out :)

I am thinking of this route, a good 50km loop that start and terminates at SOP.

http://www.strava.com/routes/666773

With some climbs to test those retro 42T/21T combo. A good coffee break at Chatswood will freshen up the tummy and legs. Mostly bike paths with two short steep descend at Fullers Rd and Anzac Ave.

Now we just need to agree on the date of ride :)

As long as we are going down Fullers Rd and Anzac Rd.

(I may think the same about Charles St of course)

Charles St is the gentlest one in Putney. If you've never done the hills there, I can tell you that they tend to be short and steep. I don't know how well you can do the zig zag on a bent.

BTW, I finally remembered where I'd met you before. It involves full face burgeonets and highland broadswords.

Hi Guys,

Just wondering if newbies are allowed to join your group rides and dont ride recumbent bikes but road bikes?

Only been riding for about a year and average at about 25km/hr and woudl love to join some group rides.

No, go away. :D
Actually, the majority of us don't ride bents, only one or two. Most of us ride road bikes, mainly old ones, but not necessarily. Of course you can join in.

Hi Vikram, you are very welcome to come. I ride a new (2011) road bike. Our group is a mixed one, so everyone's welcome really. We also don't go too fast and wait for each other if needed.

I work at Macquarie Park so am far more acquainted with the climb up than I feel is reasonable.

I usually do Melville St rather then Putney, never cycled that area. The Jellybean and I can grind away at the back as usual, and will deliberately rocket past you light-biked bastards on the descents being ostentatiously aerodynamic.

Fair enough! I can report that a recumbent takes a swordbag hanging off the seatback very nicely :)

I can do zigzag road crossings on the Cooks River Path so if it is like that then won't be an issue.

What time do you generally leave from SOP?

Whoever is leading the ride will have details up. This month's one does start off in SOP(wherever Rheicel wants it), but not every ride starts off from SOP. Start times vary, but sometime around 7am is about norm, a bit later now due to the cold and dark mornings.

Just put down your name on the list, a couple posts up, and we'll all decide on the date, whichever has the most people.

And I just noticed, if Rheicel ain't free on the 26th or the 3rd, no one will know the route.

Someone should really invent some technology that enables people to communicate routes and directions to others. Sort of like a photo or drawing of the route taken which also shows landmarks, like roads and paths. Something like that would be brilliant. I wonder why no one has thought of it.

Yes, buy a Garmin. Maps are useless.
