Postby Mrlinderman » Fri Jan 09, 2015 9:40 am

Hi all,

anyone interested in catching up at the You Yangs for a MTB Ride some time this month, I'm new to MTBin and want to get out there on the single tracks and practice but its always more fun when you got a few people around.

Would be up for that. Housemates and i have been chatting about a You Yangs run sometime soon.

I'm out of action at the moment with a knee issue but hopefully will be back up and riding again toward the end of the month.

I'd come along well, I know the youyangs pretty well.

Are you XC'ing or DH'ing?

XC for me, i'm still new to the sport so will be taking the easy routes for now till my skill and confidence builds, but no reason we can't split off and meet up and the end for a drink and chat, might as well make a day of it.

Does You Yangs easy XC routes = CX viable?

Fun! I just had a go of Han's Loop off the Main Yarra Trail out around Templestowe - apart from the rock garden sections I had a blast :D

Hi M@, would Kurrajong side be the best to go for someone new to the sport as well? looking to head out this weekend for a "have a go" day.

Definitely a good place to start; it's all smooth, bermed corners with the occasional timber bridge, small gully crossing and little bump... nothing technical, nothing steep. Some of the Stockyards trails are also beginner-friendly; the inner loop is straightforward along with a couple of the other 'blue square' trails. My standard day out is to start at the main Kurrajong car park, warm up with a lap or two of Kurrajong then head up Junction Track for a few laps of Rockwell Run, inner loop, Quarry Pit and back onto the loop... riding up Rockwell Run is also fun, but you do need to be aware of riders coming down (and vice versa). Here's one where I got lost at the end, and wound up on a horse track in a far-flung corner of the park

Of the diamonds, I've had a crack at Trav's Diamond and found it a bit much for my skill level at the end of a long day, but Lactic Acid isn't too technical. Haven't tried the others... yet ;)

I might make it along with the CX if you go on Sunday (already double booked on Saturday...).

sounds good to me, i'm confident on the bike just haven't ridden on a single track since i was 16 haha

I'm planning to head out this Sunday so would be awesome if your there, will aim to be at the Kurrajong carpark around 9am and go from there, will bring hydro pack and just take it easy, have a good gander of the area and try as many trails as my legs will let me :)

all this is weather dependent of course

Just saw that the YY trails are currently closed after being hit with 30mm of rain this morning - may be ok by the weekend if we don't get more rain. Monday looking pretty good... :|

True that - road's generally a better option after a big drop anyhow. Guessing the Stockyards side would drain pretty well, being granite and relatively steep.

I just noticed on the same facebook page they're advertising a shuttle day for Sunday though, which tells me two things - they expect the trails to dry out for the weekend, and Sunday might be best avoided anyhow

I'm wondering if it will just be easier to get the exact same wheels and try to find a tire for the bike paths etc

There is one advantage to getting identical wheels, especially if you have disc brakes, and that's reducing the amount of adjustment you have to make to the bike when changing wheelsets.

If you do get different wheelsets, you can get a mechanic to shim the rotors so they are in the same position, reducing issues with brakes.

Well just got back from a very successful ride at You Yangs, Mapmyride (workout link) clocked it at under 10km, 47min, being a big guy I didn't want to push myself for my first day out there so decided to stop at the end of that run, was really good, still feeling it now back at home, great buzz.

I combined three of the trails, worked out really well, Love the signage and overall feel of the tracks, very nice place to ride.

Already planning my next visit, I stopped to rest 3 times on this run so my goal next time is only two rest stops or less.

Got some nice GoPro Footage as well, will have to sift through it and pick out some nice bits of the trail.

Time for another ride out YY way

Been practicing and did a big social ride at Wombat last weekend so i know I can handle the steeper hills and more technical rides albeit restricted by my fitness, so I think this trip to YY will be on the other side, or do what you did Matt and warm up on the Kurra side with the same run I did before then move over to the more technical side and try out a few parts there for some fun.

If anyone is keen to tag along the more the merrier
