2015 Around the Bay Ride
Postby Krank » Sun May 24, 2015 3:13 am
So, I attempted the 2014 210km event - CW - but pulled out after hitting the werribee/altona/seabrook leg and getting so peed off at the constant stop/start and !! BAN ME NOW FOR SWEARING !! roads out that way.
This year, I am wanting to enter the ACW route and ask if the same route/streets are used in this region for the ACW route?

Then the route was all the way down the freeway to Werribee (with a couple of off ramps/on ramps to smooth motor vehicular passage off the freeway). Through Werribee and back to the freeway to Geelong.
Nothing like the Altona scenic excursion at the end when doing the CW.

How did you fare in 2010 - time wise and completion wise?

The route is essentially the same going both ways. At that time the arrows were red for the one direction and green for the other. We did our section of the route with the one colour then turned around and put up the other colour signs on the way back.

Can someone explain to me how the bus service works if the 135KM event starts at 6:00AM?
On their website it says:
"Take the hassle out of getting to the start of the 100km Sorrento ride and 135km Ride. Transport includes both you and your bike.
100km Sorrento: 5am departure from Alexandra Gardens Sunday 11 October
135km: 2pm departure from Alexandra Gardens "
On the left it has a picture of a bus with a date under it of Saturday 10 October??.
So am I staying the night in Geelong or is this a typ where '2PM' is meant to be 2AM.
Cheers,
Charles

hi krank think you've got the wrong approach to this event, its not a race and more a participation 'endurance' challenge.Krank wrote:Hi Team,

If you sit in the groups and pick up faster ones as they come past no problems there, if you've trained enough you'll soon realize the roads are fine, the event is great for what it is, if you become all negative and pissed then that may mean you're going above your fitness level or are simply not eating enough to sustain you.
of course the roads still have cars on them and with the range of fitness and skill levels in ATB .... well do you really want to be going flat out or getting pissed because a recumbent cut you off?
I've done both ways 220, the 250 etc, my favorite is Melb - Sorrento Return, most scenic and you can always go up Arthurs Seat for some more climbing ... inevitably yes you encounter the more industrial parts of the western burbs and you get them around Geelong. no big deal that's the event, its around the bay.
if you have a GPS and strava then that's the best indicator of how awesome you are as that will give you segment times for the ride. beyond that have a go at the Amy Gran Fondo for a flat out race experience on closed roads. ATB is really just an enjoyable, social training run that celebrates cycling in Melbourne,

Yes - if you've ridden 65Km previously, 100Km is no worries - just take a bit of extra food and/or stop for refreshments at some point.
Beach Rd / Nepean Hwy is relatively flat and there will be plenty of wheels to follow, so enjoy the day.

If you can do 65km reasonably comfortably then a one off century shouldnt be an issue. Even more so if your 65km was solo.Defy The Odds wrote:Rather than start a new thread I thought I'd jump on this one and ask, I'm keen to try ATB this year. I want to do the 100km Melb to Frankston return.

Now the kicker. I will be going on holiday stuffing my fat face for 5 weeks just before the event. Questions:
- Am I going to die?
- I won't be riding, but is there anything worth doing? A few squats a day, maybe 30 min spin if they have one at a hotel or something?

Good thinking. I'll bring my saddle and keep it in my backpack. I'll use it on some of those long train rides.

Thats going to be my challenge. Coming off a long layoff I went straight back into 50km rides without too much grief, so the legs should be OK with a bit of a wake up call over the next couple of months. 8 odd hours of saddle time might be an issue though.Calvin27 wrote:I think you're right, butt conditioning is probably going to be the biggie.

Not personally, but plenty of mates have done it.
They will have plenty of support - mechanics / spares / sag etc and each speed group has ambassadors to set - and maintain - the pace.
Pick the pace that is genuinely right for you and you'll have a great day out.
The MB set up is fantastic value - the kit itself is worth a lot more than the amount they charge - then there is the pre-ride party, the food on the day, the massages, etc, etc.
cheers

Good luck! I was hovering around 70km rides for a while, but went down to Mordi and back (100km for me) the other weekend with no problems, so it made perfect sense for me to do the Sorrento return route (210km). Mind if I suck your wheel on the way back?Midds_78 wrote:I'll be notching up my first Century also, doing the Sorrento - Melbourne leg

Am normally a 20k/day commuter, but have done some Boulie laps and a couple of 65km rides over the last month. I'm confident the century will be fine for our targeted 20-24kmph pace! Our group have already started thinking about the melb-sorrento-melb for next year (though the Mercedes ride looks like a plush option!)

I'm sure we'll smash the 100km .....should be a good day out, and will still have plenty in the legs to make the repeat journey to the bar later in the day !!vbap_commuter wrote:+1.Midds_78 wrote:I'll be notching up my first Century also, doing the Sorrento - Melbourne leg

Will probably look at one of the longer options next year also, although the training required through our Tassie winter aint much fun !!
Have a good ride mate
