Moving to Melbourne: Commute routes

Postby stretts » Mon May 02, 2016 5:20 pm

Hi All,

I *might* be moving from Adelaide to Melbourne for work and am looking at where to situate myself. Happy to commute up to 10kms and wondering where the best suburbs are to commute from into and out of the cbd for work. Any suggestions/personal experiences are greatly appreciated!

Depends what you can afford really as rents and houses cost a lot in Melbourne.

I only have experience riding in from the South and anywhere South of town is fine. Although I ride along the beach which is nice you can ride along Brighton Rd and StKilda Rd and there are a lot of cyclists on both routes.

The inner North has a very large number of cyclists although Sydney Rd should be avoided.

Hi Alex,

as David said - largely depends on where you end up living.
I travel in from the east and there are plenty of routes in from there - on and off road.

Also - the BV forums are a bit more localised to Melb/Vic so may have more info on specific routes people use:

Northern inner suburbs are Melbourne cycling mecca. Flat and lots of cycling lanes. Carlton, Fitzroy, Northcote, Brunswick etc.

Otherwise, maybe down the Gardiners Creek trail, but you're at least 10km before you're into affordable territory.

Thanks for your replies everyone,

Only need a small place and most stuff within 10kms is in our budget rent wise. The one thing I am really looking forward to is the commuting culture Melbourne has, Adelaide has a long way to go, on my trip to Melb last week I saw so many people riding plain clothed into the CBD. Was fantastic and I want to be a part of that.

We are looking either East or North - I've been told Northcote is reasonably priced and has fairly good infrastructure into the CBD, and after a second rec here it might be a suburb to focus on...

Thanks again, i'll check out the BV forums as well.

Go to google and fitler bike lanes on the maps.

My opinion is most within 10km of city should be well serviced. However you will see that the north (NE to NW)has these beautiful streaks of paths following the rivers into the cbd - no shared lanes etc. The East is ok provided you are along the Scotchmans/Gardiners creek trails, and the west is unfortunately crap. That federation trail goes through the rubbish and recycling precinct so don't bother.

If you are happy to use hared paths or road though this opens up a lot of options. Give google maps a shot.

So I was offered a job in Sydney, then a day later got a job offer in Melbourne. Being in a fortunate position I was able to choose between two cities - and Melbourne won out, if not for the job but for the better cycling infrastructure, a perception that the VIC gov doesnt want to get rid of cyclists off the roads (cough cough Duncan Gay) and I am a fan of AFL not NRL.

My partner may be transferred to Glen Waverly, so thinking somewhere around Glen Iris to be close to a train line and should be able to ride the Gardiner's Creek Trail into the CBD where I will be based. Looking forward to the move!

No the Magpies have finished early, and have headed off on their end of season trip.

BTW I'm a regular on the GCT. It is a good run into the city.

Glen Iris looks ok when I ride through it. I'd consider moving there myself if the kids weren't in school in Glen Waverley.
