Hi all - I have received mixed messages from Vline re taking our 29'r tandem on the Echuca and Swan Hill Vline services -
The last word we had is that the bike is too long and they wouldn't accept it/let it on the train...or at least it would be a risk pending the perspective of the guard on the day. We do have a fall back and (our Bike Friday) so all is not lost but we will be riding on clay tracks and its going to be a bit wet and slippery so we thought the full size bike would be preferable - Anyone have any experience of tandems on Vline?
Cheers

If they run trains with a d van then I would think it is fine to take on the train. Can you call them to find out? It might be the first and last train of the day that has the d van.

Swan Hill loco hauled services are the only ones with a possibility of a D van and that's not guaranteed I'm afraid. The conductor may decide you can squeeze into the guards compartment luggage area but that's their call.
Echuca services are operated by VLocity DMUs in a 3 or 6 car layout. Space for luggage is very limited. Again, you're at the connies mercy.

...whatever the road rules, self-preservation is the absolute priority for a cyclist when mixing it with motorised traffic.

Thanks Mulger B and Leaf T for your thoughts. On balance reckon we are going to take our Bike Friday tandem...we can break it into two halfs and not sweat it re connies etc...
It'll be interesting to see how the small wheeled traveler will stand up to the dirt roads/clay tracks and muddy conditions along the river tracks - We got an nice set of 20" SKS muddies for a bargain price at our LBS - fitted them today...we're ready to roll!
Thanks and cheers - John and Lisa

We have a Thorn touring tandem with S&S couplers.
The photo is on a DMU but we have travelled on loco hauled and we always break down the bike rather than trying to negotiate with the conductor.

Thanks to you...we are the owners of a small-wheeled collapsible variant - our Bike Friday tandem that we picked up after your tip suggesting we contact the Bike Friday Club of Australia...
We have had lots of rides on it since and love it! Looks like we are going to put it through its paces along the Murray River tracks – I am sitting on the Echuca train just now tapping out the post…

Hi Mike - The Bike Friday really came into its own on this mini tour...we ended up catching two trains and the Kerang bus - it preformed pretty well on the slippery clay tracks too...
Thanks again!
