Longest Bike Tunnels and Bridges in Melbourne

Postby Damian11 » Thu Jul 28, 2016 1:19 pm

Hey guys,

Just recently moved to Melbourne and hope to explore some of bike trails in the next few months!

Just wondering where do we think the longest bike trail/path tunnels and bike path/trail bridges are located in Melbourne??

Longest bridge I know of would be at the city end of Gardiners Creek Trail where the path is suspended under the freeway. Longest tunnel I know would be where Scotchmans Creek trail goes under the Monash. I don't think there's that many tunnels in Melbourne and most bridges aren't that long.
Other than that, the pontoons on the Main Yarra Trail (north side of the Yarra near the city).

The Dandenong Creek Trail (separate from yet connected to the Eastlink Trail) has a pair of moderately lengthy tunnels where it crosses under Heatherton Rd and the Monash near Dandenong. Well they certainly feel long enough when they're half underwater!
I had a thought, but it got run over as it crossed my mind.

If you're happy to go a bit further afield, there are a number of rail trails around Victoria that have old trestle bridges that you can ride across. The Noojee one is 102 metres in length.

Here are a couple of reviews of a few of them:

Beach road has a nice bike trail too. You could do Port Melbourne through St Kilda down to Mordialloc and back and that would be a solid 60km or so.

Cheviot Railway Tunnel on the great victorian rail trail is 200m long.
Built in 1889 it is a beutiful old brick lined tunnel well worth the trip out to near Yea around 1hr drive out of Melbournes eastern suburbs.

Probably the ugliest bike path 'big bridge' in Melbourne would be over the Maribynong river at Western Ring rd.
I'm not sure which would be the most unpleasant tunnel though?

Take lights if you head to Cheviot tunnel, 200m of pitch black with a small beam of light at the end. You dont realise until you get in there how dark it is, was terrified somebody may have planted an obstacle inside it, got through and realised now I have to go back again. :( The bridge on Lake Hume is quite long but there is little water under it most of the time and parts of the trail to get there are a bit rough, the bridge at Bonnie Doon whilst not as aestetically pleasing in structure is probably similar in length and has water under it, the connecting trail is better. The great southern rail trail also has a few briges on it near the Leongatha end.

Go to NZ if you want railtrails with long bridges and tunnels. The Central Otago Railtrail has about four long tunnels (like the Cheviot tunnel) and numerous long bridges. The tunnel on the Hauraki Railtrail (North Island) at Kerangaheke was 1.2kms long, with lighting qualities similar to the Cheviot tunnel  Long bridges at either end too.

Geez, I know Melbourne's urban sprawl is extensive but I didn't think it was that big yet!
