I'm beginning to think this is beginning to resemble the famous 'hedge burner' who ran amok in Melbourne's inner east suburbs a few decades ago.

Seems like they've taken the max possible in every case. I'm also a bit confused by using 18 month time period. Was there a link to the vic roads costing that I missed or did they forget that...

Todays "Journalism", just make things up.. the bigger the better. 95% of people will take it as gospel. The other reasonable 5% will be branded as doubters and against "the cause"...

I heard the story on ABC radio. Interesting that they're now doing daily sweeps for tacks. That's going to get expensive. I hope the moron is pleased with himself/herself.

And so it continues. I saw at least eight people with punctures between 5.30am and 8am this morning. Very uncool. However, possibly not helping the cause was the guy doing laps with a speaker blaring music. I can understand wanting some tunes to keep the psych high, and appreciate the dangers of wearing headphones, but I'm not sure this kind of behaviour helps foster positive relations with local residents...

Hope he's been letterboxing the locals; "The noise stops the day after the tacks"
...whatever the road rules, self-preservation is the absolute priority for a cyclist when mixing it with motorised traffic.

Maybe Vicroads should threaten to run a 24hr interstate truck route through there unless the tacking stops, ahh pipedreams, I haven't ridden the boulevard in 18 months, got better things to do than fix flats.

I did a quick Boulie ride on Sunday morning, saw two tacking victims.

It's highly likely that the perpetrator reads these forums (and others) so any planning for any potential action needs to be taken offline by trusted persons only.

I was out one saturday, around noon, 2 weeks ago repairing a puncture on the boulie.

However, it was glass on Langridge St that caused it, not a tack. Couldn't really yell this to other riders passing by.

Fortunately not had a tack on fairly regular rides on the boulie for about a year.

I have had many more close passers tho as I'm not riding on the right of the shoulder (i.e., on the road, where we are entitled to be!) And a few more close motos as well (although most motos and cars are still really good).

Another four unfortunate riders out there this morning before 8am, including one guy with tubulars. Props to the other guy who helped him out.

Having copped a few, I'm sick of it, but geez......the misinformation and outright garbage that the organisers of the rides put out makes them look like fools. Claiming the older fella who fell off kilometres away "may" have been tacked even though there was absolutely no evidence, the claim that the clean up bill is running at over $1 million.......come on guys, keep it believable and honest

I believe that there was quite a few tackings prior to the actual ride, in spite of a sweep the day before? Perp is watching closely! Cameras won't help in this instance......nor will assuming every person who walks on the wrong side of the road is guilty.

Hope they catch the dude(ettes)s. Soon.

given that most punctures on the Boullie are due to tacks (no one seriously disputes that), it's quite reasonable to put a tack as no. 1 suspect in the puncture-related crash of that rider. the tack doesn't necessarily stay in the tyre.

the clean up bill has been huge. they run a dedicated truck with a team of operators presumably being paid at night rates. it has been up and down the Boullie so many times. it's a much more elaborate and expensive operation than you may assume. I don't know the precise cost but it's an awful lot.

The punctures I've had I know were tack jobs because the tacks were there. Dunno.....it seems tenuous at best to me. Has there been a 100% documented case of any riders going down with a tack? As for bill.....I'm aware of what they use, and can make a fair estimate of cost. If it is in fact $1 mill, then hook me up! I'll save them 30-50% and make a motza anyway!

Probably depends on the angle of "a tack" (sorry, bad pun).
Lot's of riders going down. At least two yesterday morning on the protest ride.

At least two cases of riders puncturing from Boulie tacks and suffering serious injuries have been reported, as far as I know. One recently was an older guy who ended up in hospital.

So, yes.

I once punctured on the ride home in Northcote from a tack. I was riding the Boulevard but it took a few km's for it to work its way through the carcass (Continental GP 4 seasons with two vectran layers).

Laws of probability suggest the tack was picked up on the Boulevard.
