Beach Road Construction Work up to late 2018

For Melbourne riders around the popular Beach Road, here is some information on construction work which may affect this area (copy pasted, including the error from Melbourne Water in the first sentence where they wrote Mebourne.

From next month (February) Mebourne (sic) Water will be upgrading the 100+ year old sewer that runs underneath Beach Road. The area for these works will be a 4.6 kilometre alignment between North Road, Brighton and Orlando Street, Hampton. The wroks are expected to finish in late 2018.


Overview

Project overview
The Brighton Main Sewer has been servicing the Brighton and Hampton suburbs of Melbourne since 1907. Inspections of the sewer have revealed that much needed structural rehabilitation is required to both rehabilitate and continue the life of this asset for another 50 years.

What’s involved?
• Relining approximately 4.6 kilometres of the sewer main along St Kilda Street, Esplanade and Beach Road from North Road Brighton to Orlando Street Hampton (see map overleaf).
• Operational improvements to flow monitoring and control.
• Manhole repair and rehabilitation.
When will these works be conducted (at night)?
To minimise traffic disruptions in and out of the area, works are proposed to take place at night between 8pm to 5am, Sunday to Thursday. There will be no planned works to be undertaken on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays during the day.

What will I notice during construction?
• Construction related noise.
• Dust.
• Some changes with on street parking availability.
• Directional lights associated with night works.
• Traffic diversions and temporary lane closures on Beach Road.
• Potential odour emissions, when the sewer manholes are accessed.
The project team will make every effort to minimise the impact of these essential works on the local community and the environment.

Traffic management

Will be in place for the duration of the project works. Lane closures, some street closures as well as access to some residential driveways will be impacted. Please follow instructions from Traffic Supervisors for your own as well as the safety of others. We will keep you updated by email with when and where works are taking place so you can plan your rides along Beach Road with minimal disruption.

Early Works

Initial works will involve the modification of 22 manholes along the project alignment that will take an estimated 8-10 weeks. Necks and plates will be removed to allow extra space for the euipment that will be used to reline the sewer pipes and tunnels. Once widened, they will be resealed using high vis road plates coated with a non-slip surface. In areas of low light, temproary solar powered lighting will be installed for safety. For your own and the safety of others, please be aware that there will be significant changes to the road surface along Beach Road for the duration of this project.

Working hours will be Sunday to Friday 7am -10pm pending approval. There will be no works on the weekends.

Sewer relining

This will begin once the identified manholes have been modified and safely sealed. Relining will start from the southern end of the alignment and work northwards in stages to minimise disruption to road users and the community. To safely reline the sewer we will block and bypass the upstream sewer. Relining works are trenchless and require no excavation of the road. All works will be done underground using ‘trenchless technology’. Small work / equipment compounds will be visible and delineated on the road to carry out these works. Please allow enough time and space to merge to avoid collision or accidents. This will also be under traffic management

Working hours will be continuous from Sunday 6pm to Friday 6am. There will be no works on the weekends.

Bypass pumping

To safely reline the sewer, the upstream flows need to be bypassed. We will be using a 500mm HDPE heavy duty pipe to bypass these flows. It will be secured along the Bay Trail. Please note that the easement will affect how you use the Bay Trail as available space will be reduced. We recommend no riding on the Bay Trail beween North Road and Orlando Street.
Bypass pumping is safe. It will run continuously 24 hours a day for the duration of the project and be under 24 hour surveillance during this time.

Thanks for the heads up. Heading south I usually take New St from Martin St exiting at the railway crossing near Holyrood St so will avoid most of it. Might have to use that route going back too if the works are too inconvenient. The usual disruption during summer is a Sunday morning triathlon event so no biggie. There are ways around it.

Planned rehabilitation works will level the existing sewer manholes to the road surface and install new lids to provide a safer and smoother surface for cyclists.
