Nundah Crit Track to CBD Route
Postby jack11 » Mon Oct 31, 2016 11:06 am
I am looking for some local knowledge on what the best route to get from the Nundah crit track to the Brisbane CBD during morning peak hour traffic is?
Any suggested routes?
Thanks in advance.

The only real busy part is from Sandgate Rd to Austin Street. But, the lanes are wide and there isn't too much traffic. If you need a quicker route into the city there's plenty of options, but traffic will be more pressing on Ann Street.

Thanks, that looks like a good option!Ignoto wrote:Depending how confident you are on the road and where in the CBD you need to go, this route should be mean you're away from most of the traffic through back roads and bike lanes.

Good work doing all that but that's not it - although that one is OK but it would be a good bit slower than using the North Brisbane bike way.bobbythebrit wrote:I think this is what Comedian's route is and is also the one that I would recommend. Is only slightly longer than routes using heaps more roads.

I'll probably be riding it in the next few days. I'll post it up when I do.

As I previously mentioned, I got the section around Sandgate Rd wrong and ended up spending a little more time on main roads, but it wasnt too bad.

The bit on Dickson Street is sub optimal. If I weren't confident in traffic.. I'd continue on Kedron Brook and take the busway underpass onto the north brisbane bikeway.

Thanks for this! Is this the same route you would take for the return trip?Comedian wrote:This is the way I'd go.

Yes ... that's probably the official route and it's what I'd use going to the track.jack11 wrote:Thanks for this! Is this the same route you would take for the return trip?Comedian wrote:This is the way I'd go.

Like I say... if the traffic is too much take the bus station underpass on Wellington St that leads onto the brook.

I've been turning into Merehaye Street then using the footpath. Just wondering if this is most best way to getting past block on Bridge?

Yes that intersection was "upgaded" a little while back. As a friend in one of the Bug's calls it - the "Blackspot Intensification Program".daft1024 wrote:Is there a "best" way of navigating the Hudson Street/Bridge Street Albion intersection when heading south?

Anyway the best was is I think what you're doing... using the right turn lane at Merehaye and running on the footpath.
Do just have a quick check behind you as you jump off the footpath though near Marne Rd. It's no entry onto Bridge street south but I've seen cars ignore the no entry signs.

Yep they are not wrong about it being a blackspot... Its already a bit busy with the traffic light GP of two lanes coming into one after the chalk street intersection. Adding cyclists trying to turn right into Merehaye is pretty dicey.
A local had some words to me about using the footpath on the weekend, but I couldn't see another way of safely getting around that block...

I agree with this, and I ride through there every day. When that intersection was upgraded, the short bit of footpath in front of the old fire station was widened. It is "officially" a shared path, with little bike/pedestrian signs, and it is part of the official North Brisbane Bikeway.Comedian wrote: Anyway the best was is I think what you're doing... using the right turn lane at Merehaye and running on the footpath.
The "official" route heading south is to ride up to the traffic island, mount the left-hand footpath area, stop and use the crossing at the traffic island. Most confident riders either ride past the traffic island and turn right into Merehaye, or if the main road is clear, duck across it before you get to the island and take to the footpath before Merehaye Street. There is a lowered kerb for a driveway at one point and a bicycle ramp just before it.

Definitely more enjoyable than the route I would ordinarily take through Herston/Wilston. Thanks for recommending.

Hi Mate. Can I make a few comments on your ride?jack11 wrote:Tried this route out on my commute home: https://www.strava.com/activities/768531942.Comedian wrote:This is the way I'd go.

1. Take the ramp up to the Mercure hotel on North quay and then up Tank St. Much shorter.
2. Why not follow the brook at the other end? It continues the other side of Shaw Rd?
Also, there is a whole commuter corridor that you could take from out there that would save a LOT of time. I'll pm you that.

I used to go up the steep ramp to North Quay, but found it easier to just go round to the other ramp. Also I'm not a huge fan of that section of bike path (west of shand street) in the dark, there are a few off camber corners and always lots of debris on the path.Comedian wrote:Hi Mate. Thanks for sending that alternate route. I don't mind taking the long way home after work. It can be quite a nice way to wind down.
