Everesting Attempt - Nov 1 - National Arboretum

Postby ACT SC600 » Wed Oct 22, 2014 1:01 pm

YOU’RE INVITED TO BE PART OF THIS INCREDIBLE FEAT!

(please feel free to forward on to your networks)

On the 1st of November I will be attempting to ‘Everest’ the National Arboretum in Canberra.

What is Everesting you ask? Everesting is repeating a hill on your bicycle until you reach the 8848 climbing meters gained to summit Mt Everest. I hope to inspire others to join the RECOGNISE movement and to promote Indigenous health

Join me and the Recognise crew for a yarn and a feed at the Southern Deck for a great family day out (and if you are keen bring your bike as well).

Where
The National Arboretum Canberra
When
November 1 2014
Time
9am Southern Deck

The Arboretum is a 120 metre climb so I’ll need to do 78 laps (just to be safe). One whole lap is 4.3 kilometres which means I’ll ride 335km all up. I plan to start at 3am on Saturday 1 November, and aim to finish between 8pm to 10pm. Public access to the Arboretum is from 6.30am (riders willing to join me early on will have access from the side gate before 6.30am)

If you are keen to volunteer on the day, please get in touch at media@recognise.org.au

Look forward to seeing you there

You should get a whole bunch of people turn up around at around 8am as the Bakery Bunch finishes at the top of the arboretum. If I'm doing bakery I'll stick around for a few laps, otherwise I'll pop over in the afternoon for a few laps to see how you're going. Good luck!

Wont make it from the other side of the country, but kudos for giving it a go!
335km is nothing to be sneezed at on it's own, without the everest attempt.

Good luck with it!

Might see if I can make an outing of it with the family and join you for a lap (depending on if I can keep up with your herculean effort!)

I hope for your sake that you aren't keeping count! That many circuits of the Arbo would send me to a bad place so kudos to you for even thinking it a good idea. You get extra points for a lap of the Acorns every hundred kms!

Everesting Doneski :)
it was a tough day in the saddle…. Some stats

Time – 22.5hours riding
Distance - 301kms
Accent - 8900m climbing
Start – 3.15am (Saturday)
Finish – 1.24am (Sunday)
Winds – absolutely terrible – gusts up to 65km averaging 30km
Riders – over 150 riders turned up to support me plus countless volunteers during the day
Pedal strokes – over 83000 revolutions

From the Recognise website……

AN EVEREST FOR RECOGNITION

He did it!

After 22 hours on his bike, Wokka Wokka man and Canberra resident Chris Simpson reached his own Mount Everest at the National Arboretum on Saturday to raise awareness for Recognise and Indigenous health.

The huge feat saw him cycle 69 long laps of the hill – clocking up 301kms - in challenging weather conditions. It was the equivalent ascent of riding up Mount Everest – 8,900 metres.

He faced wind gusts of up to 65 kms/hour – and bitterly cold temperatures after sunset. More than 150 other riders and event volunteers joined him for parts of the challenge to show their support for Chris and for constitutional recognition. He started riding just after 3am and finished at 1.24am the next day.

Chris also rode with a team of cyclists on the Journey to Recognition relay between Alice Springs and Katherine last year.

Reflecting on his achievement, Chris said he was so grateful to all who helped to achieve it.

"I suppose Everesting is a bit like changing the Constitution – a large number of people need to work together to achieve the goal."
"All day people just kept showing up to show support for me and for recognition. Some said they'd seen it on the news and felt they had to come. Lots turned up in R shirts. The cycling community that came out were just amazing."
"I was inspired by the support and the turnout. The grassroots Canberra community came out in force to support Recognise."
"I was humbled to be a part of it."

Nicely done.

LDR, when's your Bellthorpe Everest attempt going to happen? If you don't hurry up I might have to have a go myself :)

Brilliant effort Chris, I hope every metre helps promoting the long overdue next step from the 1969 referendum.

I'm not game to do it until i've got at least one disc brake. I will be doing an everesting on a less extreme hill in the next couple of weeks though.

Well done Chris, congratulations!

I think I'd have a chance at an Everest... if M.C. Escher designed the course!
