Is there a legal requirement for cyclists to dismount? If so, why? It is a shared path (or I assume it is), then we should be about to ride without having to dismount. If it is not a shared path, then why have any of these signs on the path.
Interesting, I'm still waiting for the LEGAL signs to be installed on several sections of shared paths (the legal ones defined by Road Traffic Act) - shouldn't these be installed first before the 'pretty' ones?

Even stupider is that CoP are designating that path as a shared path to connect the PSP with the Barrack Street lanes. So they will have to remove this pointless path symbol :drunk:

As an aside, I find it amusing when I see "cyclists dismount" signs at really narrow bridges etc. - surely you take up less room and are less of an obstruction when you're riding the bike as opposed to wheeling it next to you? :drunk:

Brother works on one of these sites, confirmed it is a cycle lane, but will only stretch as far as the new buildings/development there (apparently it's a requirement given the bicycle facilities the new buildings will have).dmwill wrote:Noticed what looks to be a dedicated cycle lane on Wellington Street outside the new developments. Had a look, you're right, the 'please dismount' signage is on approach to the intersection. Further north it just says to share. There is a proper 'shard path end' sign next to the Wellington St crossing for the path heading east along Wellington.Sinner wrote:I think it's a dismount as the crossings at Wellington Street are only for pedestrians at the moment. $2.4 million dollars from the Perth Parking Management Fund has been allocated to the implementation of new on road cycle lanes along a key north south corridor on Barrack Street between Riverside Drive and St Georges Terrace.
If we compare this with CoP Bike Plan:
BarrackSt - between Riverside Drive and Wellington St – create on-road cycle lanes in north and south bound direction, treatment at various intersections for bicycle priority - $120,000
So why are the figures so significantly different, in particular, the first figure is only for Riverside Drive to St Georges Tce, the second is all the way to Wellington St.
The distance between Riverside Drive and Wellington St is around 300m, so this makes this development around $7.2M per km for cycle lanes. Isn't this a tad expensive when CoP's original proposal was to reduce car parking and smaller car lanes to accommodate cycle lanes.
And why is this coming out of Perth Parking Management Fund. This whole section has been rerouted 100's of times for the Elizabeth Quay project who should then be picking up the bill to put Barrack St back to how it was proposed back in 2009 (ie with cycle lanes). Or if that is not possible, put it back to how it was prior to Elizabeth Quay and then give it back to CoP who can then build the cycle lanes for $120,000 - freeing up around $2.2M for other cycling projects.
What are other's views?

Doesn't really matter who picks up the bill, it all comes from the State Govt in the end.
The $120k estimate would have only allowed for line-marking and green paint with maybe some minor kerbing alterations

Water Corporation and City of Perth are working side by side to complete a number of upgrades along Barrack Street that will start Monday, 13 April 2015.
The works along Barrack Street will take place between St Georges Terrace and Wellington Street. Water Corporation will upgrade a water main, and City of Perth will convert Barrack Street to two-way traffic.
The two organisations are working to deliver the projects simultaneously in order to minimise disruption to the local community. Water Corporation expects the majority of the upgrade to the water main to be completed in June, with the City of Perth due to begin work in late May.
For the duration of both projects, sections of Barrack Street between St Georges Terrace and Wellington Street will be reduced to one lane northbound. Delays are expected, and road users are encouraged to take alternate routes.

Exciting news! The new and long awaited Barrack Street bike lanes will be open for business from Monday. There is still some minor works to be completed in the coming weeks but riders now have a new route through the City .... ride it people!
Well done to the City of Perth, Department of Transport and Metropolitan Redevelopment Authority.
My response:
BWA, why is this 'well done'? these lanes are 6 years late and costing an additional $2.3m in funds from Perth Parking Levy which should have been used to build more bike lanes in the Perth CBD. BWA, can you please clarify exactly why this is 'well done'?
I'm still waiting for BWA to respond to their Annual Meeting where I asked similar question to them back in April.
Will be interested to see if these new bike lanes finish at St Georges Terrace or go all the way to William St, and then what happens when we get to William St to get to Roe St.

As from 8am Monday morning all traffic management will be removed from Barrack Street marking the completion of the MRA’s works and allowing cyclists to use the lanes.
Following some resurfacing works on Barrack Street this weekend the new cycle lanes on Barrack Street between Riverside Drive and The Esplanade will open to traffic at 8am on Monday. Please note the green cycle lane marking is recommended to be applied 6 weeks after asphalt works to provide proper adhesion. A such, our contractors will line mark the cycle lanes but they will apply the green marking at a later date.’

No northbound lane is its blocked by barriers and debris.
So it is indeed a very special day that we celebrate the opening of 200m of sealed shoulder in the southbound direction only. No doubt the next generation of cyclists will be asking their parents "Where were you on the 29th of June 2015 daddy?"

Looks like the weather held them up. Barrack Street between The Esplanade and St Georges Terrace now has very wide traffic lanes as the cycle lane lines have not been marked. Looks like another week to wait......

Barrack Street is due to open to two-way traffic in late November, with minor works such as the bike lane surface treatment to be installed March 2016.
