Look Mum - I'm flying

Postby rolandp » Sat Nov 20, 2010 1:22 am

Got caught out last night just south of Karrinyup Rd on the shared path. Forgot about the rise in the shared path, and with the heat yesterday, the rise was suddenly a lot more. Didn't notice it as I was riding home at 8:30pm and suddenly I'm in the air - not too sure if it was two wheels off at the same time, but fairly scary either way.

Took a photo this morning:

MainRoads confirmed today that they have expected the site and will be taking action (I did report it two weeks ago and followed up since). I also passed on the image showing how much this has now risen. I have another closer image where I had actually put the house brick under the gap to show how big it now is.

As the weather heats up, this thing does happen on some of the older concrete paths, so if you notice a rise developing, report it, and try to remember to slow down around the area.

Roland the powers that be built those two story units on the cornner (Near that bike path ramp you pointed out) with minnimal parking spaces, the cars can often be on the bike path and breaking the path edges.
I dont think singnage is the answer as it adds too the visual polution,a coulpe of parking tickets would do the trick.

What causes it, especially in the heat? Something expanding underneath?

Ah.... concrete expansion?

Still some sink holes I've seen during winter look scarier.

They need to replace that section with hotmix because every year a slab will pop up.

They really need to replace the whole section because there's lots of thirsty gum trees in the area which have lifted most of the slabs. That ones the worse of them though.

I noticed that when it was 39 the other day, that the similarly paved area just after Reid highway was bumpier than usual aswell.

I like the way your concerns have been recognised Roland! A double mattress conveniently placed 20m north of the ramp.

PS Did I share the crossing of the hump with you today? It looked like your bike! Me - older puffing gent travelling south on road bike!

Hopefully they just resurface the whole section with some nice new smooth pavement.

I passed that section on Friday and although dangerous, it would have been fun to speed over it and try to get some air ;).

Gazman, I moved that blasted mattress off the path this morning. I had thought the same thing and prehaps I should have relocated closer to the hump. I was in the area around 6:30am this morning, so it may have been me at that time, heading south.

Heard back from Main Roads today, and crew is scheduled out this week 'to cut and install larger expansion joints'.

MainRoads have been out in the last two days:
Image

I counted 9 other spots in this area where this treatment has occured (and aren't these lovely mounts still). Near Dunster Rd they removed a whole section and replaced it as it had also developed a lovely mound over time.

I would like to think that this will be the last treatment required in this area but history keeps repeating itself.

That's certainly a dangerous spot at the moment. I was going past there the other day and there was a witches hat, which I presumed was for the guy who was painting over the grafitti on the fence. At least I'd slowed down for him before I reached the spot you're talking about. I'll see if I can get a good pic of this in the next day or so.

Cheers,

Not great photos, but managed to get a couple on my way back from Mandurah today.

The witches hat I mentioned had been thrown over the mesh fench and was about half way down the embankment to the freeway. You'd get some air coming from the South, but come from the North and you didn't know this was here, all you'd get is a face full of pavement!

That Beach Rd underpass was always poor, but this is just crap what they have done. They did the same at Stirling overpass bridge (close to where the original topic is located), and it is bump all the way.

I'm glad I was riding my mountain bike when I commuted home on Friday. I didn't notice the witches hat (or it wasn't there) and just as I was approaching that spot I remembered that I had gone over a sharp bump that morning... BOOMF! Oops there it is.

The area at the Beach Road underpass has been fixed in the past couple of days. Much better!

It appears that there may be a hump epidemic on the freeway path. There is another one rising just south of the park near Excalibur Wy, Carine.

MainRoads have been doing markings up North. Below photo taken last week near overpass bridge at Civic Place, Innalloo:
Image

I've always been tempted to take a can of paint to complete the markings (ie where there is a bump which hasn't been marked), but never have in case it slowed down the repairs on the originally marked bump.

If your bump hasn't been marked, report it to Main Roads.

It's back. Hot weather and this section is again on the rise. Not as bad as last year, but then again it is only the first week in the 30's.

I noticed the hump on the way home this evening (heading north). On the way in (heading south) didn't notice it, in the morning.

Will report next to MainRoads to rectify before it gets too large.
