Maylands bridge replacements (PSP disruptions)

Postby wellington_street » Mon May 12, 2014 10:57 am

Main Roads has awarded a contract to demolish and replace the Seventh Avenue bridge across the railway line at Maylands. This will be followed by the replacement of Third Avenue bridge next year.

Project Overview.

There's no mention of PSP impacts but with the demolition of bridge spans to come in the next month, I'd expect a few closures. The informal parking area near the station will also become a construction compound, so watch out for construction vehicles/persons.

Work has begun on the North side of the rail line. Guys were there this morning digging up the road and the entry to the Bridge.

They have fenced off both entry's but the PSP and road underneath are still open at this stage.

There will be diversions from the Bassendean - Perth PSP at 7th Ave to come. Likely route will be Whatley Crescent as it is the only alternative to Guildford Road (shudder)
The back streets of Mt Lawley Inglewood and Bedford are quite nice to ride also if you are not in a huge rush. Before the PSP was developed these were my chosen routes into the city, Mt Lawley shops, Morley and Mt Lawley ECU
The bicycle is a curious vehicle. Its passenger is its engine.

Hope the section of the PSP at Seventh that is closed isn't ridiculously excessive. The PSP is at my door and Seventh is only 1 km away. :(

The fencing guys were there at about 8:30 this morning. Diversion might be sooner than later.

I head this way to the PSP some days for the trip home.

Thanks, I'm hoping the PSP is only closed between 6th and 8th. That way the on / off Whatley/PSP will be relatively easy and reasonably safe. :)

If it is between Caledonian and 3rd it will be quite dangerous IMHO. Looks like we will find out soon.

Coode may be a much safer prospect :)

I take that route sometimes too, just to spice it up a little. Be mindful of potential doorings along Smith St in Highgate, definitely claim the lane.

Advice from Main Roads this morning
Hello
There is anticipated to be a minor detour of the PSP but no major disruption. Once details are finalised, we will advertise this in advance.

Blogged on this back in October 2012.

The second bridge to be “upgraded” is the historically recognised Seventh Avenue Bridge in Maylands which it is planned to replace. Whilst I appreciate the need to have good infrastructure it is disappointing that this historical bridge will be replaced rather than upgraded and hence retaining its character. I do hope that the design features will retain its historical character.

The works will involve construction of a new steel and concrete bridge with wider traffic lanes, pedestrian/cycle path, balustrades and traffic barriers. Design features will be agreed with the City of Bayswater to ensure heritage requirements are met.

Noticed throught the gloom this morning that they had been busy over the long weekend and the northern approach & span over Railway Pde were gone.
I assume they'll start on the southern side fairly soon so keep an eye open for diversion routes & timings.
On another note - thanks to the idiots that decided to smash glass on the upramp over the Graham Farmer Freeway - will have to check my tyres at lunchtime as a good chance of a flat!
The sooner we have some form of glass deposit the better.

matthecat...it's like that all the time.

I have had flats through there more times than I would like to think about. Most annoyingly heading out for a river loop on a Sunday morning more than once.

I'm not sure many pissed idiots round that area are going to be thinking about glass deposits anytime soon.

Fencing & witches hats up around the western end of the "car-park" when I went through last night.
This morning at about 5.45 a ute parked there I assume to ensure no cars sneak through.
Things might be kicking off very soon and if we are diverted up Railway Pde not looking forward to crossing over the bridge at 3rd (?) Ave - is there a footpath/dedicated bike lane - I recall the bridge is pretty narrow.

It sounds like the disruptions will be very minor, at least to begin with it's only during weekends, which is great work by Main Roads.

There is a path over 3rd Ave. There is usually a traffic jam along Railway Pde getting over 3rd Ave, cars tend to block the left side of the lane, so expect to use the median strip to get to the bridge.

Just note that this is illegal and will not do cycling's public image any good.

Blocking the intersection of 3rd and Railway with your car while you wait to turn left is also illegal.

Doesn't stop them doing it.

Went through early this morning and was expecting the worst.
Very slight detour - well constructed, signed & protected from vehicles.
Pleasantly surprised.

Yeah it is very good. Just don't ride under the bridge when they lift an old bearer off - dust storm!! Looked like I'd just done the Paris - Roubaix!

Whatley Crescent is closed this weekend (14 + 15 June). Project manager has comfirmed the PSP will remain open.

I was also pleasantly surprised to see that they installed a diversion that is safe for people on bicyles, and in fact favours bicycles over cars (the cars lost a lane, to be used by bicycles).

Well done, MainRoadsWA

Just a heads up that the diversion (very slight) is in place again.
Noticed they had poured the footings last night when I went through.

So far so good for me. Hasn't really impacted the PSP which is great.

Work progressing well with the biggest danger to PSP users being the workers who think that wandering across the path to have a chat/smoke without looking is acceptable.
Detour is blind so lets all use our common sense and slow down.

Good plan. Nearly taken out last night by 3 very quick riders in close succession as they took the blind LHander entering the diversion heading East :(
