PETER BARTLETT, board member, Bicycle Transport Alliance, West Perth
Comments:
THE Bicycle Transport Alliance welcomes a new report calling for greater provision for bike riding as a way to combat Perth’s congestion and growing health crisis.

The Committee for Perth report entitled The Rising Cost of Living in Perth into Perth's growing traffic woes identifies a number of strategies to ease commuter pain, including providing better facilities for bike riding.

A lack of well-designed, connected and safe bicycle infrastructure means riding a bike to work, to school or to a train station simply isn't an appealing option for most people in Perth, leaving the bulk of commuters stuck in cars and crawling in traffic.

There’s an incredibly strong economic case for investing in cycling and the Committee for Perth report makes clear that spending on bike infrastructure delivers important financial, health and social benefits for communities.

Communities that invest in biking and pedestrian facilities not only help to ease congestion and promote better physical and mental health, but also they give people genuine transport choice.
