Powder coating or respray recommendations

Postby Marmoset » Thu Jul 24, 2014 3:03 pm

I'm looking at buying a second hand bike and getting it resprayed or powder coated and am looking for some recommendations and what it cost you, if anyone has had a frame makeover recently.

Frame is a straight forward aluminium job.

Cheers

Have had both a steel and aluminium frame powdercoated a few years back. The finish is reasonable.

Aluminium frame (MTB) cost $180. Needed a bit more time to sandblast. Supposedly the grit they use is too volatile and would have left a pitted finish on soft alloy, so they used 'recycled' grit which took longer.

Steel frame was about $100.

The finish is reasonable, it can chip from hard knocks, etc though. Depending on the type of bike, get the right parts faced afterwards - BB, Head tube, brake mounts, etc.

I got one done last year in Albany.

Went to the sandblaster to remove the paint, for $40.
Then went to a local panelbeater and asked for any leftover colours he had and he sprayed in for $60.

I wasn't that fussy on colour though, but it was a nice burgundy.

Total $100 cash

I think I'll try the auto bodyshop route, given the quotes I've had from others...
