DoT maps no longer being printed
Postby just4tehhalibut » Sat Jul 26, 2014 3:29 pm
My LBS had new stock of the pocket-sized recreational maps but said that the Dept of Transport have announced that they've stopped producing hardcopies as of this weekend, they'll only be available online. Not sure if this only applies to the free recreation maps or the 5 main commuter maps as well. If you want these then grab some from your LBS now. If you're involved in a BUG or other organisation encouraging people to get out on their bikes in fair weather then you might want to order a few boxes and stock up.

Thanks for the heads-up. To be honest I wouldn't bemoan the lost of the commuter maps as much as it is disappointing to see these go.

There may be an upside to discontinuing the printed copy. It may encourage the abandonment of the unwieldy PDF files and encourage a vector format which could be laid over something like Google maps. This would be much better for phone users.

Werd exadios. The PDF file chugs like a tractor. Google Maps for Mobile already has cycling route overlay option, the hard copy version is virtually redundant in this day and age.

Technically the maps are vector and PDF is more than capable of containing vector info, however they have been setup to look pretty for print. There are no layers so that you can turn on/off the visual stuff and they definitely haven't been optimised to view on mobile devices with little grunt. I assume it was output from some kind of mapping/GIS software (my background is design and print, so I'm a bit vague in this area). Sounds like what you want is gps data in something like a .KML file. Easily doable if someone at the DoT managed to steer the project in that direction.

"The Department of Transport is moving towards providing electronic copies only of maps and other resources in the near future. Some of our maps (the pocket-sized ones and some of the PBN’s with more to follow) are already geo-referenced, which means users who open the map through the free App Avenza on their mobile phone (Android and Iphones) can see where exactly they are. It’s pretty cool stuff!"
Straight from DoT. Haven't downloaded it myself, but looks like it would be pretty useful! Local governments can/will still produce their TravelSmart Maps in hard copy, though I guess the transition to electronic only may happen in the future.

Avena appears to a fancy PDF reader. This means you have to download and install the PDF map on your phone or tablet first. On my Android phone I installed the app, then went to DOT commuter maps page and then downloaded a map. Once it was downloaded touching the download gave me the option to open it in PDF Maps, the Avena app. It then imports to the app. This part took ages with the Joondalup map (read minutes on my HTC One).
The outcome of that process was an error message, "Could not process the map file."
My second attempt at processing was completed and I was advised "Map not referenced" which means no geo-referencing.
I guess this is one of the maps not yet done. It also does not display well on the phone. You have zoom in a lot to get any detail. Would I bother going further with it? No. Google maps is far easier to use.
