How to get my bike to Europe?
Postby Sheridan » Thu Aug 07, 2014 11:27 pm
Hi all,
I have a bike in Perth and I really want to get it sent to me in Europe. It's with family members who know nothing about bikes - any suggestions on how best to get it here? I'm not terribly concerned with the cost.
Thanks!

Same way you get a bike shipped anywhere really, get a bike box at a LBS if you don't have a specific bike bag, remove the front wheel, unscrew the stem to lower the handlebar, put bubble wrap or Styrofoam on all the bits of the bike you want protected and ship it with your preferred method. Easiest is to bring it with you on the airplane. If you're already in Europe and want someone else to ship it to you then get a courier service like DHL to ship it to you since Aus Post won't deal with it because its an oversized box.

Your family should take the bike to a bike shop and have it packed, then weigh and measure the box and start calling freight services for quotes.

What's LBS?
My family (sister) is really not very handy and she is hesitant to do any dis-assembly, lest she damage the bike.
Any recommendations for a bike shop that would package the bike nicely for shipping?

Might be cheaper to have someone fly it there as baggage tho.

I don't live in a major hub in Europe, so it's 3 separate flights from Perth and probably $1200-$1500 in airfares - plus someone taking the days of travel.
Are there any specific recommendations for good bike shops with a good workshop, or will any LBS do for packing it?

Cheapest option might simply be to sell the bike and buy a new one there. In some countries the bike you ride in Perth won't be legal there but then you might also be paying up to 22% VAT on a new bike, so weigh it all up.

This is how one of my friends did it.
The airline gives you 20kg Etihad may give you 30kg, pack the bike in a bike box and wrap it all up etc etc.
Then put all your clothes in the bike box as much as you can pack in plastic and send the bike as baggage if the bike is light you may get off under 30kg if not there's only a minimal charge for excess baggage . Most bike shops will do it and show her how to reasemble. for a small fee.
Pack the rest of your clothes as hand luggage and then buy clothes in Europe cheaper there anyway.

What’s with these recumbent bicycles? Listen, buddy, if you wanna take a nap, lie down. If you wanna ride a bike, buy a bicycle

Obviously no one is understanding the OP.
He's in Europe and needs his bike sent to him. No one is flying anywhere.
Best suggestion which has already been made is to have your sister take the bike to a bikeshop if you give me her suburb I can recommend one for you. A standard bike box will measure 1500x780 so all you need now is the weight of the bike in the box.
If you need suggestions for a freight company let me know I can suggest some for you.

Agreed, becker's plan is the easiest. Since he's "on the ground" and has offered to recommend a shop I think you're pretty much sorted.
One thing I'll add is to make the shop aware that its going on a very long journey. This means multiple hands, loading and unloading so more care is required with packing than say, an interstate, one leg journey.
