"Gateway WA" releases video rendering of works along Tonkin

Postby HappyHumber » Thu Aug 21, 2014 1:20 pm

gatewaywa.com.au/news/gallery-and-publications/gateway-wa-3d-animation/

Bit disappointing on the resolution front, but interesting enough in what detail you can make out.

I dunno, I reckon the project could've saved a lot of money merely calming motorists nerves with loudspeakers and radio frequency-jacking tools, pumping that music through to people whilst stuck in traffic. ;)

I'm optimistic they're going to complete some of the disparate stretches of Bike Paths that are there at the moment, but it'd be nice to see it projected in detail somewhere. You can sort of follow the pink/salmonny coloured lines either side of the roads on the fly throughs a bit higher above ground level.

What would you like to know? I may be able to get access to the drawings.

Just where the shared paths are?

Well.. my particular point of interest is the present incomplete smattering of paths around the SW end of Dundas Rd.

Where the otherwise excellent Roe Hway path ends heading NE along the Roe H'way PSP at Welshpool and how (if at all) it plans to continue up and join the little "island" of paths around the AbernethyRd/Dundas/Freight Rail Line overpass. I think it's also referred to as the Daddow St. overpass/bridge.

[edit: basically traversing this map, from the usual compass point approaches]

But in essence. Yes... where the Shared paths are projected to be. That'd be nice :)

I think the Perth SE Metro corridor is a bit under represented on BNA.

that'd be nice, strawburger. tah.
I realise these things are pretty road centric.. but any insight ahead of time would be nice.

Personally it'll be a another safe training route and a good way to get to the hills.

I too hope for a little more "Hooking up" of existing paths.
This will provide some great loops tho.
There is a real need for a path on Roe over the railway bridge

Very pretty. The road seems quite busy but I didn't spot a single person using the shared path - not even a trailbike or scooter

A celebration of smoothly flowing car traffic. With a fraction of the money the airport could have been de-clogged with efficient public transport. The thinking, planning and investment in Australia is about 40 years behind best practice for sustainable, people focused development. In other countries, airports are smoothly connected to rail, bus and tram services.

Maybe we're a lot more sophisticated & complex creatures to model than the flat boring and brain dead motorists? The extra Computing grunt required to generate it might have forced the Main Roads IT budget in to Health Dept style meltdown mode.

Looks like it's all grade-separated except for Abernethy Road where you will have to cross at the lights. I am really looking forward to it being finished.

There are sections of path already laid alongside Leach Hwy between Orrong Rd & Abernethy Rd, nice n wide from what I can see. But it isn't all completed, and unknown about access points open or closed

+ 1 to that. That area has been a huge dead spot for cycling infrastructure. The new shared paths look great!

Took a bit of a spin through the area to see what is open and what's still being built. Approached from the south via Hardey East Rd in Forrestfield I think it is. The path to head west (toward Freo) on the Roe Hwy looks finished but was closed, the path towards Perth open. However, the Perth bound section is not complete and is closed so you end up being spat out onto Abernethy Rd in Kewdale, just near the Kewdale Freight Terminal truck entrance. So on a weekday a nice ride on a piece of industrial area road where you play with the friendly truckies:

Image

It is not immediately clear where to go at the Leach Hwy/Abernethy Rd intersection, but that will improve with signage and you won't actually use that once the Tonkin Hwy path is open anyway. From there I followed the path all the way to Stanton Rd, then turned back for a look at the airport viewing area, and then followed the signs to the international terminal. The path leads right up to the terminal front doors, and if you like planes has better views than the viewing area:

Image

After riding to work most shifts for eight years down Horrie Miller Drive, and the surrounding roads to get to it, this new path is heaven.

This whole gareway WA is coming together. The PSPs look awesome!

It will be some great cycling for those working around the airport.
Only prob is on the north side of Tonkin it doesn't really continue along the hwy very well, can't wait til they extend it up to Morley drive. :)

Unfortunately i dont think a bridge over the rail line and Guildford Rd is included in the Northlink scope. We can hope i suppose!

Northlink will definitely be giving us a PSP from at least Collier Rd to Ellenbrook - not sure if it will be just shoulder riding beyond there to Muchea.
