Route advice CBD to Cannington

Postby matthecat » Mon Aug 25, 2014 11:18 am

Hi Guys,
Need to get from the CBD to near Carousel - weekday late afternoon.
Any suggestions on best route or any areas to avoid welcomed.

My commute home is East Perth to Cannington, and the route that I would suggest is:
  • Claisebrook overbridge onto GFF PSP (watch the turns onto and off the Windan Bridge and the road crossing at Goodwood Parade Boat Ramp)
  • turn right on the road at Riversdale Rd overbridge into Burswood
  • left and along Goodwood Parade on the road and over Great Eastern Highway on the footbridge (turn right at the end of Goodwood Parade onto a bumpy bit of unmarked shared path to get to the footbridge)
  • right onto Rutland Ave (NOTE: Need to turn right just past Victoria Park station to remain on Rutland and continue under the bridge on a shared path at Roberts Rd, just keep the railway on your right hand side and you can't go wrong)
  • across Welshpool Road where the PSP begins (road traffic must turn left, there is a little cut-out for bikes to go right and then across Welshpool Rd)
  • follow the PSP (remembering to give way at level crossings) to Cannington Station
  • cross the tracks using the station underpass (walk the bike through) and ride down Grose Ave to get to the "back" of Carousel where Nandos is.
There are a few small hills on the route but nothing too taxing. The climb up to Riversdale Rd overbridge is the steepest section but it is short.

Depending upon where in the CBD you are starting from it may be better to take the Causeway shared path out and then take the shared path along the front of Burswood Casino until you go under the footbridge and then double back using the ramp to get up to the footbridge over Great Eastern Highway and on to Rutland.

Across the Causeway and then along Albany Highway (40kph zone where single lane, then two or more lanes from Welshpool Rd to Carousel) is a more direct option but I probably wouldn't chance it with after school traffic and the shared paths/footpaths along Albany Highway are strictly low speed only.

Thanks for taking the time to post Scott_C.
Familiar with the ride out to GEH - then it will be an adventure.

To simplify Scott_C detailed response.

Get to where the Armadale train line bridge crosses Great Eastern Highway. Take the neighbouring pedestrian bridge over GEH then follow the train line until you get to Cannington station. The northern side of the train line is much friendlier for bikes, so don't cross the train line until near your destination

It is my preferred route to head eastwards to home as the traffic is greatly reduced due to various traffic islands that stop cars but allow bikes.

Thanks for this advice.
I used this route today in reverse on my way home. I rode from Jandakot to Cannington along the Roe Hwy PSP then followed the above route to the Guildford Rd. It was a good direct route without all the mad cyclists on the freeway path. And only about 500m longer than the freeway route as well.

Didn't realise how lucky I have it riding in to the CBD from Bassendean each day along the PSP.
This had some fairly serious road junctions to negotiate along the way but no real worries.
Thanks for the route advice.
