haha I'm sure still I'm keen to have a go at the 50km for my first go. Anyone else? Wouldn't mind hooking up with a group of similar athletic ability - average 25 - 28 kmh?Parker wrote:Nooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo. Apparently the ER was full last time.

I did the 50km as my first organized ride 2 years from the old Langley park start and it was fine. No issues the whole way.
Last year doing the 98 (couldn't they find another 2) it was a bit more complicated start from the mall but they released in waves so it was fine.
The normal big organized ride caveats apply. Some Fred on a BSO will sign up for the fastest group and then weave all over the road as everyone overtakes but normally you are past them by the university and the shared roads.
I'm planning on doing the 98 again this year.

I've chosen Horizon House as my charity. If you aren't participating but would like to donate, here's a link to my page. https://greatbikeride2014.everydayhero.com/au/gordon
BTW I've paid in full, and donated $50 to Horizon House so all donations will go to Horizon House

Thanks Scott, I've signed up for the +/- 27 kmh group so as long as the organisers group the riders appropriately and there are no "freds" I'm hoping for an incident free event.Scott_C wrote:I did the 53km course last year with a ~30kph average and had no problems. With the arrangement they had in place last year the only riders who were likely to have trouble were the medium pace (around 28kph to 32kph) 98km riders who would be overtaken by the fastest of the 53km competitors. Otherwise, if you started in the right group, there was no one faster than you behind you unless you were doing the 98km slow enough to get lapped.

I find that as there is only a participant's word that they average that speed, some inflate their abilities, others want to go with friends, and some are just clueless.
Hope everyone signed up enjoys the day and stays safe.

I didn't have many problems and didn't find it much more sketchy than a big group ride. The first rise near Steves hotel was a bit hairy and that other steep bit but it was a pretty good hit overall.
In the end I started from the second group and averaged 35km/h but I would go from the front next time I think to be able to get away and not have to fight to the front.

I can't remember what happened there actually but I remember it being a bit of a scrum. Probably just because it's the first gradient. The mosman one is a drama with people hopping off right in the middle of the road etc.

Ride to Canning Bridge, cross over to the Freeway side then ride as fast as I can on the leg to The Narrows parallel to you guys on the Freeway. Take a few happy snaps of large groups and so forth.
Pick up the group at the base of the rise at Mends and Mill Point. And THAT is where the payoff comes. I usually mange to pass a few of those struggling after having ridde most of the circuit and wh oare trapped in the crush.
After than I simply follow along the path. Good skill development trying to keep some sort of pace on a path with lots of trees and moving peds and pram ramps at intersections.
I usually finish with a quick wander around the finish to catch a few familiar faces before heading off to Sassys for my coffee and cake.

no its not, done it several times and haven't seen much drama. the start is staggered, so there are more smaller groups in single and double-file.kx315 wrote:It cannot be that bad surely ....
the freeway ride i agree is much much more dangerous!

in just the short stretch I observe along the Kwinana Freeway I have personally seen two serious group accidents.captain peacock wrote:no its not, done it several times and haven't seen much drama. the start is staggered, so there are more smaller groups in single and double-file.kx315 wrote:It cannot be that bad surely ....
