A commuting route from Canning Vale to Burswood

Hi,

I've just been relocated to Burswood (near Crown Casino) for work starting next week and I'm located in Canning Vale.

Could anyone advise on the most practical route from C/Vale to Crown Casino in Burswood? I'd prefer PSPs or dedicated bike lanes especially with all the casualties occurring recently in Perth.

I was thinking of riding along the PSP on Roe Highway and turning left on Orrong Road. I believe there's a PSP along Orrong too? Does anyone have any experience with this?

Roe Hwy PSP and then turn onto Railway Parade just under Albany Hwy. Try This

I believe there's a PSP along Orrong too? Does anyone have any experience with this?

The shared path along Orrong Rd is footpath quality and has numerous side street crossings where you will need to give way and watch for turning vehicles, it is not a choice I would make or recommend for anyone who averages over 25kph.

Personally I would rather take IncognitoMosquito's suggestion although it has some long sections that aren't shared path. This is the route I take from Cannington to the city for my usual commute and I haven't had any serious problems with it.

If you really prefer shared paths then backtracking along the Roe Hwy PSP to the Freeway PSP and then along the South Perth foreshore is an option and is probably the best quality paths (they are probably the best paths in the state) but it is 50% further than the more direct routes.

Thanks for the advice guys, really appreciate your input. I'll go for a test ride over the weekend on the Roe Highway PSP and onto Railway Parade.

The freeway PSP is by far one of the best paths in Perth, smooth and flat with the scenic Swan River alongside it. Gonna miss it the fresh air but not the crosswinds though!

I agree with Scott. Railway road is the best direct route. I commute on the section from Roe to Burswood 3 times a week and nearly always go Railway rd. Be aware that there is quite often a lot of glass along this route though, especially near the train stations.

Orrong road is a nightmare for riding on.

Freeway PSP is the best route if distance is not an issue.

Another alternative is Roe PSP to Orrong and then Welshpool Road which I use heading north almost every week day. Dual lane so plenty of room for cars to pass and relatively little traffic if you are heading up there at any time around 6-6.30am. Some nice new bitumen along a good portion of it and only a couple of sets of lights. I love riding up there with the rising sun at my back and my shadow stretching out up the road.

Openstreetmap with the cycle map layer turned on can be good for looking at options, it shows the main bike network routes and cycle paths quite nicely.
I think this link will take you straight into the cycle view, otherwise choose it from Layers on the right.

I think the railway is probably the best option. Looking at the map there is possibility of a shortcut via or parallel to Nicholson Rd and Canning River park, but I suspect the railway will still be faster and more pleasant due to less cross traffic, lights etc.

I wouldn't even consider Oorong. It's not on any trajectory from CanningVale to Burswood. It's a cluster fluff of smoke-boxes come peak hour. Sure you could ride amongst them on the dual lane, but it adds stress to what should otherwise be a relaxing or more therapeutic exercise. If I absolutely/positively had to go that way, I'd be studying the parallel residential streets instead. There'd be the odd dog leg, but still a good run of straight stretches.

+1 to picking up Railway Parade from the Roe PSP, near Albany H'way for the most direct route relatively stress free route - though I am not sure where you are getting on the Roe PSP. South/Ranford, Willeri or Nicholson Roads?

I'm in the Cannington area, and have sliced and diced many of different routes into the city via Vic Park & Burswood. I hate busy roads but I don't mind exploring. It breaks up boredom if you do a commute often enough.
