Can anyone lend me an odd pin spanner

Postby hiflange » Sat Jan 03, 2015 5:21 pm

Hi Perth peeps, I'm looking to borrow a rather chunky pin spanner to suit the BB cup in the pic below...
Hopefully I'll only need for a minute or two!

Do you have a picture of the spanner? I have an adjustable one that may work.

I have the Park Tool pin spanner with the yellow handle, fairly chunky, might work. Otherwise would one of those old two-toothed freewheel removal tools fit?

Thanks guys, I haven't been able to find a pic of what I'm chasing.
I have red and green handled pin spanners, unless the yellow is substantially bigger I don't think it will work. Good idea on the two pin freewheel tool. I found a Park PR2, the tangs are the right distance apart but a millifrag too big, and the hole through the middle too small to accommodate the BB spindle. Worst comes to worst I could butcher that I guess.

A brass drift won't cut it?

Have a look at your discount motoring emporium, pretty sure I found something roughly suitable for small change BITD...

Do you own an angle grinder, Rob?

I have a couple and as well as their original, supplied rigid pin spanners I also own a 'Universal' adjustable pin spanner in my arsenal. Seeing as the actual pin diameter & spacingfor your purpose isn't crucial, I'd figure something like this would do the job just as well.

You may already have one of these which potentially may do the job, depending on the size.

Otherwise...

(links through to an example on Fleabay - $AUD 7.50 incl P+P) Bunnings etc have them.

Are you reusing the BB? Can you get a pair of vice grips on the threaded section? I've done that before but it does damage the cup a little.

Thanks, this has really become an "In The Shed" topic now :D Anyway the adjustable angle grinder spanner (that I already had ) worked, or is working... I can't believe how stiff the cup is, everything else on this bike has come apart really easily.

I've never yet owned any bike specific pin spanners. To date I've always made do with some variation of punches or drifts as described by others, circlip pliers or the universal angle grinder pin tool.

It's all a trade off of precision & part preservation I suppose.
