From the Public Sector news.
The Auditor-General, Colin Murphy, is to investigate the adequacy of metropolitan cycle ways.
Mr Murphy said he would conduct an audit to "determine whether suitable support and infrastructure were provided to enable cycling to be seen as a viable mode of transport in the Perth metropolitan area".
Whether there was "a comprehensive and well maintained cycling network which covered the main metropolitan transport routes", supported by measures to "promote cycling as a safe, convenient and viable mode of transport" would be among the issues covered, he said.
"Cycling is seen as a viable alternative mode of transport to motor vehicles in many cities, especially over shorter distances," Mr Murphy said.
Adequacy to be evaluated.
"Safety concerns, traffic and poor cycling infrastructure are perceived as the most significant barriers preventing uptake and participation in cycling across Australia," he said.
"Successive State governments have supported the development of cycling networks and infrastructure to encourage cycling in Perth."
City of Perth councillor Reece Harley welcomed the audit.
He told the ABC he was particularly concerned that there was no continuous, dedicated cycle path between Perth and Fremantle.
The cycle path ends near the Grant Street station in Cottesloe and cyclists were then forced out onto a narrow cycling lane on the edge of Curtin Avenue.
"Once the path ends they get chucked out onto the road," Mr Harley said. "Once you're out on the road you're competing for space with cars and trucks.
"It becomes very dangerous and the simple solution would be to continue the cycle path all the way to Fremantle so people can commute easily between the two cities," he said.
"I think the people of Western Australia would expect that the cities of Perth and Fremantle would be connected by a bike path."
