Development Application - Swan River Pedestrian Bridge
Postby rolandp » Tue Jul 21, 2015 8:21 am
The Metropolitan Redevelopment Authority (MRA) invites comment on a development application for a proposed pedestrian bridge over the Swan River from East Perth to the new stadium at Burswood.
The pedestrian bridge, together with eight (8) bus stands is proposed to be located adjacent to Nelson Avenue/Nile Street and extend approximately 370 metres across the Swan River to the site of the new Stadium in the Burswood Peninsula.
Development management responsibility for the works associated with the development in East Perth (bridge abutment and bus stands) rests with the MRA while the Western Australian Planning Commission (WAPC) has responsibility for the bridge itself.
For further information on the development application please contact the MRA on 6557 0700.
Comments close on 8th August.
How much is being spent on this bridge and it's primary construction use is for event days at the new Stadium (around 14,300 pedestrians)? How about letting us ride on it on non-event days? The width of the bridge is a minimum of 9m path, so plenty of space for bikes/pedestrians on non-event days and ramp access at both ends.
If you feel strongly about this one, please provide a public comment.

One might gently refer to the recent DoT sponsored visit by the Dutch, including their recommendations on what to do with such an important and WIDE piece of infrastructure to make it safe.rolandp wrote:If you feel strongly about this one, please provide a public comment.
That is: separate cycling lanes, which might be closed at beginning or end of events.

The document seems to be at odds with itself, along with the title we haverolandp wrote:If you feel strongly about this one, please provide a public comment.
vs, under principlesdocument p11 wrote:Safe: providing a pedestrian environment that feels comfortable and welcoming; avoids conflict with cyclists and pedestrians; and offer direct, safe and unimpeded access.
However it is not articulated quite how cyclist connectivity is being improved (by removing peds from Windan bridge? ). Indeed, only two of the drawings include images or mentions of cyclists on the bridge.document p17 wrote: The proposal improves pedestrian and cyclist connectivity between East Perth and the Burswood Peninsula which will provide opportunities to improve the health and well-being of the community.
Perhaps showing mode segregation would spoil the purity of the bridge?
(I visited a renovated university which had to place signs in the halls and common areas showing the directions to toilets - because the architect would not allow such signage on the walls )
No anglers shown either.

It is a very serious bridge and having fun on the bridge will not be tolerated. Fishing is too much fun. Riding a bike is too much fun. Walking is the only acceptable way of crossing. Gait should approximate that of pall bearers.Thoglette wrote:The document seems to be at odds with itself, along with the title we haverolandp wrote:If you feel strongly about this one, please provide a public comment.vs, under principlesdocument p11 wrote:Safe: providing a pedestrian environment that feels comfortable and welcoming; avoids conflict with cyclists and pedestrians; and offer direct, safe and unimpeded access.

Persons found showing disrespect to the bridge by skipping will be prosecuted.

Cyclist path mentioned on page 56, going up the guts of the bridge - maybe its a mistake - we only have shared paths in WA...meh.
Dead against it and will be putting in my comments.
See BicycleDutch blog to see how cheaply similar bridges are built in the Netherlands....they even have WiFi on them.

On game day will we still see cars driving and parking on the shared path behind Trinity College (like when something is on at the WACA) ?
If the new bridge leads to more cyclists on the western side of the river, will the Claisebrook Cove bridge have the dismount requirement removed ?

Work starts on Swan River pedestrian bridge
17 November 2015
The significance of the Swan River and the area around the planned Swan River pedestrian bridge to the Whadjuk people was recognised on-site today with a symbolic pre-construction smoking ceremony at the East Perth end of the walkway.
Indigenous link recognised
Bridge to open at end of 2016.
Transport Minister Dean Nalder said consultation would be ongoing with the Whadjuk Working Party throughout the project.
“This bridge is an integral part of the State Government’s transport solution to move people to and from Perth Stadium when it opens in 2018,” Mr Nalder said.
The contractor York Rizzani De Eccher has spent the past several months refining the design for the steel and concrete cable-stay bridge and construction will start later this month.
The Minister said the bridge would be assembled and built on the Burswood Peninsula side and a smaller work area would be established in East Perth in January.
The first in-river works will see silt curtains installed and clean granite placed in the river from the Burswood foreshore to build a 100 metre-long causeway. This will be used for in-river construction and as an assembly platform. It will be removed when the project is complete.
Like the nearby Windan traffic bridge, the new pedestrian and cyclist bridge will have a clearance of about eight metres on its underside and will be open for year-round community use. The design incorporates two landscaped pause points with seating for people to take in the river vistas.
We have it in writing, it is a pedestrian and cyclist bridge - last paragraph , even though it is titled a 'pedestrian' bridge.
Rode through the area today, and no signs of 'work starting'.

Spot on, i agree, it is a Waste Of ....... Time And Money. We need another bridge like a hole in thw head, the windan bridge already has a walkway. And where are the cars going to park in East Perth??BandedRail wrote:Work has started for the WOFTAM bridge on thecasinostadium side of the river. The shared path diversion is now in place - it's not bad compared to some we have had to endure. Be warned that it has some tight corners, there are two vehicle crossing points, the sight-lines aren't great and there are some narrow sections where you don't have an "out" if it goes pyriform. I'll be disappointed if cyclists attempt dodgy overtakes in the diversion (but I know some will ). It's going to be "interesting" as the days get shorter as this will be a nasty spot to meet cyclists without lights after dark (I refuse to call them Ninjas - Ninjas were highly trained and disciplined mercenaries, whereas any noob-head can ride without lights).
The detour is very windy as said, rode it today, care is needed.

There are massive car parks right next to the WACA and the main bus interchange is being built next to the new bridge. Its definitely needed to serve the events but is pretty useless for commuting, altho maybe a useful detour to avoid Claisebrooksofty wrote:Spot on, i agree, it is a Waste Of ....... Time And Money. +2 was an unexpected oasis. Will probably never go in the stadium or use the bridge but for 60-70 thousand footy fans it will be a good thing.Red Rider wrote:+1, love it.방구 똥 wrote:The detour on Burswood side is very beautiful, lots of greenery, even a waterfall!
