Missing links built for Perth's cycling network
Postby wexford » Wed Oct 14, 2015 1:11 pm
The State Government today revealed the blueprint for Perth's cycling network, releasing a map of proposed cycling and pedestrian paths to be constructed over the next four years.
Speaking on Ride2Work Day, Transport Minister Dean Nalder said $27.07 million would be spent on expanding the network of principal shared paths at the following locations:
Fremantle Rail line - Shenton Park to Loch Street Station
- Grant Street to Cottesloe Station
- Cottesloe to Victoria Street Station
Midland Rail line - Guildford Bridge to Railway Parade
- Guildford Station to East Street
- East Street to Morrison Road
Mitchell Freeway - Civic Place to Karrinyup Road
- Karrinyup Road to Erindale Road
Major Projects - Northlink WA
- Malaga Drive interchange
- Gateway WA
- Roe Highway
- Roe 8
- Mitchell Freeway extension.
"The map shows paths will be extended as far north as Hester Avenue in Clarkson and will be closing gaps along the Fremantle and Midland rail lines," Mr Nalder said.
The expansion is part of the Western Australian Bicycle Network Plan 2014-2031 which guides the continued delivery of cycling infrastructure to meet the need for convenient safe cycling routes. This year, the State Government announced a $75 million investment in cycling over four years, which will continue to improve safety and bike network connectivity for all West Australians. This includes $34.4 million for major transport projects and $27.07 million allocated to principal shared paths.
"The growing success of cycling in Western Australia is shown by a 34 per cent increase in the number of cyclists using our cycling and walking paths since 2011," the Minister said.

Which is piddling, when even the RAC says "spend $25M per year" (2012)The minister's office wrote:Fact File
Over the past seven years, the State Government has invested $112.8 million in cycling networks throughout WA, resulting in 246km of off-road shared paths and 74km of on-road bike lanes
In 2014-15, the State Government delivered $7.6 million of principal shared paths along the Kwinana and Mitchell freeways and Midland and Fremantle lines

Would much prefer they fix up the hutton st - powis street section. It's orange on the diagram but given it's not specifically mentioned, probably not being built?

Just flicking through the Auditor-General's report, on p14 it mentions a design but no implementation date.RoFlmaTiC wrote:Would much prefer they fix up the hutton st - powis street section. It's orange on the diagram but given it's not specifically mentioned, probably not being built?
The estimated costs at current construction rates of these sections are: $28 million – the Glendalough Station to Hutton Street section of the Mitchell Freeway PSP is in the detailed design process, which will conclude in late 2015. The project will cost about $15 million per kilometre, due to the number of structures and the need to fully separate busy cycle and pedestrian paths

In 2013, the Mitchell Freeway was widened including the Graham Farmer Freeway. Cost -$53m which included:mount_street wrote:Just flicking through the Auditor-General's report, on p14 it mentions a design but no implementation date.RoFlmaTiC wrote:Would much prefer they fix up the hutton st - powis street section. Providing an extra lane in the Northbridge Tunnel in each direction;
Building an additional lane on Mitchell Freeway northbound from Graham Farmer Freeway to Hutton Street; and
Widening the traffic bridges over Powis Street, Vincent Street and Scarborough Beach Road
Couldn't work out why the PSP wasn't done at the same time. Now it's going to cost $28m with no specified date when this is to occur.

Someone got keen when using their orange crayons. My reading from other material, the east side PSP will finish at Erindale Rd, where once again we will have to cross over to the west side once again.RoFlmaTiC wrote:Hmmmm a lot of the construction on the mitchell fwy north of karrinyup looks a bit superfluous? Looks like they want to put a PSP on both sides of the fwy...

Today's announcement has been very carefully worded:
Civic Place to Karrinyup Road
Karrinyup Road to Erindale Road
As two projects, and no mention if there will be underpass for Karrinyup Rd crossing.
And with an estimated completion date of June 2018 for both projects, that is a lot more riding on the unmaintained existing PSP.

but we do criticise local government, not mentioning any names; and we don't take into consideration any of the plans and strategies that have been formulated by local government relating to cycling (except mentioning that Stirling are doing ok).
Why does the crash data in the CBD only go from 2006 to 2010? Main Roads have data to the end of 2014 in full years. Or is it that these earlier years paint a worse picture and nothing that Vincent, Perth, Main Roads etc have done in the last few years has had any impact?
On the one hand it is good in terms of highlighting the need for more funding; but have they really done enough research for this report? No standards or guidance? Go and have a look at Austroads as a starting point!

Not on my watch - not even if it has gold plated, air conditioned, separated bike paths (which it could well have given the price tag).

Yet none of them realize we pay for roads too so we can ride on them, and cycling infrastructure gets us out of their way and lets them drive faster, safer.
Still, the murderous attitude of many of the drivers was pretty disappointing.

Well it is not a bicycle path or a bicycle lane, (as defined by law) and a white line doesn't protect you from anything. Drivers for some reason still think it is their space.
Either to open doors into or drive in.
As they are not real "bicycle lanes" they have every right! Go figure. This is not really solving the problem.
