The segment is obviously new, but it has matched old rides. If you look at the "this year" leaderboard rather than "all time", the fastest speed drops from 44.5 km/h to 29.7 km/h. Each to their own. I'm not sure what belting across a pedestrian bridge proves but I guess its important to some people.

Growled at by security to slow down as I was doing 12.8kph by my Garmin and struggling to stay upright.
I think its only a matter of time before bikes are banned from the bridge, but it won't be due to an incident, but rather by design.

Additional details on road closures on these days at MainRoads.
Love that we can close major road routes on a work day for a bike race - should be done more often to change motorists habits.

The Elizabeth Quay bridge will be a through route only with no stopping:
Friday 25 November, 4.00pm - 11.00pm
Saturday 26 November, 4.00pm - 11.00pm
Sunday 27 November, 2.30pm - 9.30pm

Acting pursuant to Section 66 of the Western Australian Marine Act 1982 and Regulation 10A(b) of the Navigable Waters Regulations 1958, I hereby close the following area of water to all vessels and prohibit swimming from 4:00 pm to 12:00 pm on Friday 25th November 2016 and Saturday 26th November 2016, and from 2:00 pm to 10:30 pm on Sunday 27th November 2016. In addition, no vessel will be permitted to anchor or moor in the following area during the above stated times.
Area of Closure: All of the waters within the Elizabeth Quay inlet bounded in the west, north and east by the shoreline and in the south by the pedestrian footbridge at 31°57.539'S, 115°51.317'E and 31°57.571'S, 115°51.366'E.
This area is set aside for safety measures during the Arcadia Australia event.
The above closure is not applicable to bona fide craft involved in the event, Government Vessels and the Transperth Ferry Services.
