Giro d'Perth 2016
Postby hiflange » Sat Jan 23, 2016 1:43 pm
Who else is going?? What to ride?? What to wear??
Well I'll be doing the 31k version again, maybe on my Hetchins I will not be wearing a flamingo costume
The WAHCC will be back this year too, with some fab old bikes (1870's anyone?) under our fab new gazebo (thanks Lotterywest)

I'm thinking about it. What's it like? (Obviously good enough for you to do again!)

It's the most fun cycling event I've ever done. For real! Finding out about the area while stopping off at cafes and having a chat, it's ace.

In these times fund raisers are almost always carried out the "easy" way. That is, the benefitting body hands over the running to a professional organisationthat takes the liions share of the collected funds. The Giro d'Perth is put together the old school way - effort, volunteers, a personal commitment. So for those that object to the way that nost cycling events are run, you owe it to your own beliefs to support this one.
On the more basic issue of "is it fun?", yes. I've participated in it and I add my voice to the experience. If it were not for me doing a labour of love in Kulin at the time I would be in it again.

I love it. Great vibe and something for everyone; some people hurtle 'round on fixies or roadies, others take the kids at a kids pace. Some cruise and stop for coffee along the route. Quite a few people get team costumes happening (hence my flamingo comment above).AlexHuggs wrote:I'm thinking about it. What's it like? (Obviously good enough for you to do again!)
The only formal competitive element is filling in the treasure hunt / puzzle card, which means stopping and looking (sometimes looking really hard) occasionally. It's pretty social, I went on my own the first year and ended up teaming up with a couple of others on the puzzle clues. I've got my fingers crossed for harder puzzle clue this year.
The lineup of bikes at the end is pretty awesome. Best old bike last year was won by a stunning unrestored 60's Bianchi, turns out I knew the owner through work - never knew he rode.

+1 - best bike event in Perth - I'll be there.
Completely agree with what Colin had to say.

Weather looks to be perfect for the GdP tomorrow. I still haven't decided what to ride, my family are joining me for the first time so I'm stepping down from the 30k to the 11k
I'll be floating around the WAHCC tent with a couple of extra bikes on display post ride - come and say hi
