Beverley Heroic 2016

Postby hiflange » Mon Apr 25, 2016 11:50 pm

Is it too early to be thinking about the Heroic??

Nope; I for one spent a few wet grimy hours in deep contemplation today - Mr Vesperazzi, friend Sarah and I spent the better part of ANZAC day battling the elements west of York, all the better to torture enduarnce riders come October!

104km... it felt like it was half gravel and half hills. The last 20k (all bitumen, no rain and mostly downhill was the blissful payoff) If you're signing up for the Beverley this year this is some of what you'll face on the long version.. see you there!

I am reliably informed that the Heroic will be on Sunday Oct 9 with frivolities on Sat 8th. No Grand Final clash this year = no excuses!

Anyone on for a "proper" race out of Beverley on Sat 8th (The Heroic is on Sun 9th). 1 question survey here to gauge interest.

A rare weekday off for me today... back out to Beverley to keep Mr Vesperaazzi company on the recon for the 80k route. He's making some changes in light of the slightly too heroic conditions last year :-)

Last ride I took my '92 Tommasini which got so full of gritty sand that I'm going to pull it to bits and give it a long overdue overhaul. I went back four decades and rode the '55 Rotrax today. Considerably slower despite the much finer weather! I will say the wider tyres (32-630) and more relaxed geometry made for much easier and more predictable handling on the gravel sections. Metalrideroz has been in touch by PM to chat about tyres, specifically wider tyres for 27 x 1&1/4 rims, he has some Japanese websites bookmarked.

Beautiful weather today - here's a pic;

Classic is in the eye of the beholder.

Besides, no where is it written on the event website that you have to ride an older bike.

This sounds interesting although I think the 50 mile would push the limits of what my body could survive.

Do many folks do the ride on mountain bikes?

You can ride any type of bike. If you feel most comfortable on an MTB then use that.

Any feedback from folks who used this as their first "big ride" event?

Rode the full course yesterday with a couple of Audaxers hoping to be involved volunteering/marshalling on the day, so we can stil accrue the club kilometres.

We had pretty good weather with the unsealed bits being at a pretty optimal level of moisture & firmness.

Tips to the newbies?

Ride your own ride. Don't worry about keeping up with the more gung-ho; whether they're mates or otherwise.
A climb early on may feel like a doddle; but pace yourself. A similar sort of incline will feel terrible later on.
Don't think of it a race; think of it achieving a distance.
Don't brake on soft bits, use your momentum to power through. Keep your hand off the levers when you see spots approaching - and suppress any instinct to grab the brakes if you do hit the stuff.

I just ran cheap & cheerful 28mm tyres; $35 at short notice from LBS, probably coulda got 'em for a third of that online with more lead time) I checked they they were capable of the pressure ranges I normally ride at and then ran them at about 10% less than what I normally do on purely sealed rides.

I've jut got my first road bike, currently on 25s but it can fit 28s. The 80km ride has become a new Bucket List item :)

How much of the ride is on unsealed surfaces compared to sealed?

I recorded my ride via GPS, and dropped some waypoints at the beginning and of each unsealed section. But I havent gone back and compiled it into a pretty format just yet. The figure I kept hearing bandied about for the 100 miler was about 40 odd km total unsealed (mostly over 2 major sections) which seemed about right.

One of us did the 50 miler, but I haven't spoken to him since and I hadn't really disected that route myself.

For the longer distance, Helena Rd between Gt. Southern Hway and West Talbot Rd is the unsealed stretch to look forward to.

There's some glorious sections out there. To qualify for Audax Australia 'Mixed Terrain' route classification we need to piece together routes with at least 40% unsealed, but I had a ball yesterday, and look forward to piecing together other sections, if not by bike at first but the p'haps the odd Sunday drive maybe in order for less time consuming reconnaissance.

Was just corresponding with my Audax club mate who did the 50 mile; He reckons less than 15km unsealed.

Hopefully the rain eases off well before next weekend! I think of those of us who did the vollie ride had it good for weather and road conditions.

And the forecast is dim to say. Weather is being driven by cold fronts :( Some form of showers pretty much every day and saturday is wet, so 15km of unsealed that is wet. Will be fun for the riders, I'm working bleh

If anyone has a cheap/crap/used/basic packable rain jacket in medium please PM me as I just realized my rain jacket takes up too much space in my pannier. Many thanks.

And a bit of wind to go with it by the looks! Hopefully the gravel sections will be well packed down. They were so dry last year that some parts were like riding on the beach, the soft part of the beach.
My '52 Flash is back in one piece and I took it out for a 20k shakedown today. I managed to shake the seat post all the way down in the last few k's! Easy fixed. There's worse though, so I'm still not sure whether it will be the steed du jour.
Looking forward to seeing you lot out there :-)
