Woohoo, 1.0 passing law is coming.

Well, it looks like WA will be getting the 1.0/1.5m passing law too. Congrats to Minister Liza Harvey who really does seem to 'get it'

From WestCycle Facebook yesterday:
Contrary to the article published in Perth Now today, minimum passing distance is NOT confirmed as legislation to be introduced into Western Australia. Unfortunately to suggest it's a done deal is not the case, we are big believers in its introduction and we hope this outcome is achieved but it is certainly too soon to say it will be introduced.
WestCycle's goal is to create cycling friendly cities, last week it was reported that a code of conduct was being developed. One of the measures in that document is that drivers are recommended to give 1m distance when overtaking at 60km/hr or less and 1.5m when above. Regardless if it is legislated or not drivers are strongly encouraged to do so - it's simply a common sense measure.
WestCycle has been discussing the legislation of minimum passing with the Government for the last 12 months. The conversations are positive with the Government taking a measured approached to ensure any changes are well thought through.
We will continued to strive for this outcome and update you in an accurate manner when appropriate.

That's becuase the mouth breathers that carry on think that the only riders out there are the ones who ride in packs, wear Lycra team kits and are only doing it for exercise instead of going to the gym. They don't consider utility cyclists at all.Mulger bill wrote:I still can't fathom the utter stupidity of the morons who can't comprehend that every 10 less riders will prolly mean ~5 more cars...

Or as I pointed out to a work colleague the other day, those thirty five lycra cyclists in front of you could be thirty five car drivers on their way to the gym to pedal a staionary bike......bychosis wrote:That's becuase the mouth breathers that carry on think that the only riders out there are the ones who ride in packs, wear Lycra team kits and are only doing it for exercise instead of going to the gym. After all, WestCycle is completely independent from the government but somehow knows what the minister really meant. But in this case they're probably right.rolandp wrote:From WestCycle Facebook yesterday:

The minister previously indicated that existing reckless/dangerous driving laws would be used to deal with this matter, with no change to the regulations. But that was years ago and SURPRISE nothing's happened.

Weren't the Grievous regs introduced recently? Media announcement here.Thoglette wrote:The minister previously indicated that existing reckless/dangerous driving laws would be used to deal with this matter, with no change to the regulations. But that was years ago and SURPRISE nothing's happened.
Major traffic law changes to make roads safer
From memory these were applied to a cyclist who knocked over a pedestrian in Perth CBD in Apr-2016.

Yes, but these take effect after you get hit, not before.rolandp wrote:Weren't the Grievous regs introduced recently?
What I was referring to was the following, (emphasis mine) which clearly allows a car to crawl past closely but not do a "close shave" at speed
It's just not being enforcedRoad Traffic Code 2000 wrote: 18. Reckless driving generally
The provisions of this Part do not justify a driver driving at a
speed that —
(a) may constitute driving carelessly, recklessly or at a
speed, or in a manner, that is dangerous to the public,
having regard to all the circumstances; or
(b) exceeds any maximum speed applicable to the vehicle
under a road law.
Regulation 18 amended in Gazette 23 Dec 2014 p. 4920.

In WA, they certainly don't enforce bodily harm regulations even after you hit someone.Thoglette wrote:Yes, but these take effect after you get hit, not before.rolandp wrote:Weren't the Grievous regs introduced recently?
