Independent bike stores you recommend

Postby Mububban » Fri Sep 23, 2016 9:27 pm

Nothing against TBE and Bike Force or any other franchise chain, but what independent shops do you recommend (particularly north of the river)? Some may be excellent stores but may not have an easily find-able web presence like the chain stores have.

I've just got hooked on road bikes myself, plus my kids are primary school aged so over the years they'll be needing stuff too.

Im not a online shopper so support the local guys. Bit like you into road, MTB, track, 4 kids so need the full arsenal. Unfortunately i can't find a one stop shop so tend to spread the love. First stop is always Ward cycles Morley. Always friendly service which i rate highly. Next is Elite in North Perth or Glen Parkers. if those 3 don't have what I'm chasing then I'm generally walking out empty handed from other shops, or just walking out due to the non existent service........i really wonder how some shops stay open these days.

So far, an acquaintance has recommended these stores:

- BikeForce Subiaco have gone beyond the call for me a couple of times over the years.
- I found a good deal at BB Cycles Mount Hawthorn on bikexchange.com.au a few years ago.
- Blazing Saddles Doubleview has helpful friendly staff.

Bikeforce Balcatta is my LBS, i dont buy much from them because they dont really stock what i need when i need it. But i have used them for things i dont have the tools for etc, service is always great, very friendly and accommodating. And always happy to knock off a bit off the price (long time rapport)

Recently went into Malaga Cycles to get my lefty fork removed, they knocked out the steerer tube and removed the fork in a few minutes and sent me on my way, no charge nothing. Admittedly its not a big job, but they couldve easily charged $10-$15. And this is the first time ive ever asked them to do anything, so big thumbs up to them.

Elites good, have had some work done with them, ie removing/installing bb30 adapters etc, truing wheels etc.

Dont think Elite do much kids stuff, but Bikeforce Balcatta and Malaga Cycles do

Name change only. Same people, same great service and now an even better range of products at much better prices.

Rapidly diminishing portfolio as many distributers disagree with their business model and refusing to deal with them.
They are the c r c of Oz and will damage the industry in the long run.

+ 1 for Cycle Bespoke
The name does sound a little elitist but they definitely are not. So the 'upper end' comment is not quite fair. From personal experience, they will happily work on a wide range of bikes.
I have used them a lot in the past - they were my preferred LBS after trying out several - but I do most of my own work now days)

I use Cycle Bespoke occasionally, and they are good. What I meant by the "upper end" comments is more the range of bicycles they sell. The other LBS I use frequently is Guildford Cycles in James Street, Guildford. Destry knows his stuff and works on all types of bicycles.

+1 for Cycles Bespoke.

Being open until 7pm week nights is pretty convenient for passing by after work, etc.

I was pretty stoked when I walked in at 6pm on a Friday evening and they were happy to press a new bottom bracket into a frame for me on the spot!

Looks like their website's WordPress install has been hacked. It serves up a blob of obfuscated JavaScript that sends you to some unrelated advertising website the first time you visit it. I guess it is a good thing they aren't selling anything via the web.

Ward Cycles in Morley are great. The mechanic is very helpful and knowledgeable. I used to be a regular there when I lived close by and they'd give me good rates on parts and labour.

I used Mercers in Fremantle a bit when I passed by their doors regularly a few years ago. Old school, lots of knowledge, lots of NOS parts. Haven't been in there for a while.

I won't take my bike anywhere else, chris is really passionate about bikes (and different sorts of bikes) and the services they do are top notch.

(that's not to say i haven't had good service elsewhere, elite racing in northbridge for example, but bespoke is close to home for me and having been going there for a while i get on well with the guys down there).

Their website is in the process of being updated - new closing time is 530 weekdays (2pm saturday) - their instagram feed is the best place for updates - and nice pictures of new bike gear.

I think I'll give their Saturday morning group ride a go as it's not far from me. Had a look through the shop window today (closed as it was Sunday) and looks like some nice gear in there.

Anyone had anything to do with the new William St Cycle Co? Looks like a fixie-style specialist with Chapelli and Tokyobike on the floor. Walked past but not yet been in.

I'll throw a good word in this thread for my LBS - Bike Force Cannington now Bicycle Centre Cannington.

The Bike Force chains have broken up, leaving only a couple of stores under the old management. It seems the breakaway stores can keep the signage/branding for a while but are gradually changing over to their own names etc.

Really helpful guys, always attending to the odds & ends I come up with on my single speeds. I've never bought a bike from them, just always go there for parts installation, mechanical work, advice etc. I have bought some parts there, but usually I buy online and get them to install for me. Lots of things like fixing punctures or buying tubes as well over the last couple of years! Happy I can give them anything from carbon roadie to retro racer or fixie to sort out & they get it done in quick time

Who is online
