Birds on the up and up - Swan River

Postby ColinOldnCranky » Thu Dec 15, 2016 9:45 pm

It looks like a bumper season on the Swan for migratory birds. The numbers are still swelling. Lotsa juvenile ducks and smaller ducklings too.

You don't see any of this from a car.

My son noted the large number of black swans about a 1km north of canning bridge a few weekends ago. Only an occasional ride for us, so not sure if thats the norm. The water baths around the yard are very quite at the moment. Not mad bird watchers but do enjoy watching whats coming through the garden depending on season and whats flowering/fruiting.

I've seen a few ducklings about lately - keeping close to mum and dad...

I saw a couple of parent ducks get into an argument once over which way to go when they reached a T-intersection... Kids standing around, unsure of what to do... Then mum just walks off in the middle of the argument and takes the kids with her in the direction she wanted to go. Dad's quacking a few times, then gives up and brings up the rear.

I guess birds have the same social problems humans do -
