State Government Promising $129M Investment in Cycling over 4 Years

The $129 million will allow at least 95 kilometres of cycling path to be added to the network - as well as a range of community cycling initiatives.

The record funding includes $55 million towards filling gaps on the current Principal Shared Path (PSP) network around Perth and $29 million in grants for local governments. This represents a $46.3 million boost to cycling investment.

An additional $45 million will be invested in paths alongside new major road projects over the next four years.

The gap-filling PSP expansion will include the following locations:

Mitchell Freeway PSP

• Glendalough Station to Hutton Street missing link; and
• Erindale Road to Civic Place missing link.

Fremantle Line PSP

• Grant Street to North Fremantle extension.

Midland Line PSP

• Success Hill Station to Railway Parade cul-de-sac missing link.

Along with the announcement there has been an update of the PSP Expansion Program Map which adds a new category of infrastructure "PSP Equivalent" on the Armadale line, presumably an indication that sections of the cycling infrastructure here may be on-road instead of PSP.

Do we play spot the 2017/18 project expenditure?

Wonder why they choose Greenwood Station for this announcement given $0 is being spent at this location, and if they took the time and walked or rode to the PSP, they would have seen the lack of maintenance. The only reason I can think is there was discussion at better access to the station but not detailed in the annoucement, and in the last 12 months, they did paint one of the PSP intersections green. There is also the relatively new cycle way north of the station but a fair distance from the station when wearing suits, and the road noise from the freeway limited hearing the announcement.

Assuming that they are keeping their election promise of $20M PSP funding by 2019/20 the funding profile for the $55M promised will be something like 5 10 20 20 over the next 4 years, it isn't surprising that there are no short term projects as there is less money allocated for the next 2 years than there is for FY2019/20 alone.

Wonder why they choose Greenwood Station for this announcement

Apparently because they are building another secure bike parking shelter there and they think anything that rises above ground level is more photogenic than a flat path and if they went out to Bayswater to look at the PSP overpass being built there they might be asked why the PSP east of the station has been closed for the airport railway construction with an on-road detour when the specification requires a minimum of like-for-like temporary paths for any path closures.

But, if this is classified as a major project to launch this announcement, someone has a very weird sense of priority.

DoT issued an updated PSP Expansion Project Map last week (Friday 13th October):

A cursory inspection seems to show that there is 0 PSP work currently ongoing except for along Tonkin Hwy as part of Northlink and that isn't expected to be finished until 2019.
