The City is seeking public input about creating two bike and walk paths:

Rockingham Road Protected Bikeway:

The aim is to build an off-road bikeway along Rockingham Road from Hampton Road/Cockburn Road to Spearwood Avenue.

It would most likely be made of red or black asphalt with green markings at conflict points.

The exact design is complex and yet to be determined. We will look at issues like road crossing points and having separated paths protected from traffic. Ideally, it would be suitable for youngsters to seniors, or families

They could really do to determine what they are actually intending to build, the title says "bike paths", the first line says "bike and walk paths", the blurb says "off-road bikeway" and the map says "4m protected on-road red asphalt bi-directional path" these are all different things with fundamentally different uses and challenges (particularly a bi-directional path alongside so many driveways, you are just asking for collisions as it is hard enough to try and get drivers to look 1 way for oncoming bikes when coming out of a driveway.)

There is also the fact that it is effectively illegal in WA to have an on-road bi-directional path without a continuous solid (not painted) median separating it from the adjacent carriageway.

But what should I expect from the council that put up "bike only" signs on Forrest Rd, turning the footpath into an exclusive bicycle path that is illegal for pedestrians to use, when they meant to put up "bike lane" signs for the on-road bike lane.

They already have a bi-directional path on North Lake rd that doesn't meet this criteria. Painted lines and no kerb. Do not like riding on that as it feels unsafe.

I occasionally visit Rockingham - I feel safer riding on the road. The shared paths are full of idiots.
