Cycling to Bents Basin

Postby hartleymartin » Wed Oct 25, 2017 11:46 pm

Does anyone know if the roadworks on Cowpasture Road are finished? It has been a few years since I rode out that way. I plan to ride from my home in Fairfield out to Bents Basin Campground (about 40km) for an overnight trip some time in the next few months. The plan is to follow the cycleway along Orphan School Creek, then down the cycleway along Cowpasture Road to either 15th Avenue (to avoid the busier section of Bringelly Road) then down to Bringelly Road and head out to Bents Basin from there.

I have been meaning to do this ride again for some time, though this time in the S24O (Sub 24-hour over-night) format.

I was eventually able to find out a bit of information with some websites that have details of cycleways and suitable roads. Google Maps more recent street view revealed that the Cowpasture Road cycleway has indeed been completed.

I also discovered that the railway line to Leppington is a big help. I can take the train there, then it is only about 19km to the camp site down Bringelly Road, continue along Greendale Road and then take a left turn onto Wolstenhome Road to the camp grounds.

This is handy if I need to get to the camp-grounds on say a Friday afternoon, but then I have plenty of time on the Saturday to ride all the way home to Fairfield.
