Having owned several G(W)R over the years I've followed this thread with interest. I still have a very early GR just like the OPs but in dark green. It's a lovely bike that will get rebuilt one of these days. However I do wonder if the mention that some had 650B wheels is correct? The one I have now has the original ISO 590/26x1-3/8" wheels which - technically speaking - are often referred to as 650A. I know that there are complications with other obscure sizes also referred to as '650A', but I guess the only point that may be worth making is that it may be a mistake to assume that the current crop of high-quality ISO 584/650B tyres are going to fit your old GR or GWR '26" ' rims. Of course there's only 3mm difference in radius but that may be enough to make fitting 650B tyres difficult if not impossible. Has anyone tried?

I'm not that brave! ( I know that 622 doesn't fit on 630 and 630 don't work on 622) Apparently Panaracer still make a decent (by all reports) 40-590 tyre called the "Col de la Vie"savvas wrote: Has anyone tried?

Have just picked up a dark green World Randonneur that has been modified a bit as it is now a flat bar and from memory they were all drop bars. I was wondering what group set they come with standard? Mine has Shimano Mountain LX crank with bio pace rings, Mountain LX rear derailleur, Exage front derailleur , Shimano Cantilever brakes, Shimano 105 hubs, 700C rims and Shimano 7 speed Acera Shifters. The rear hub was a Uniglide hub but unfortunately the cassette is bent and cracked and the axle is also bent. I have fitted a 7 speed mtb hyperglide freehub to get it up and running and will finish this off tomorrow.
Does anyone know what was stock running gear for this bike?
Thanks
Nicko

Seems to be the later generation, the lugs are not as ornate as the earlier versions. Deore FD, RD with Sakae half-step touring triple up front and a big 5-speed rear freewheel. The Shimano cantis still bring it to a stop on an absolute ten cent piece! Dunno what I'm going to do with it yet. Wheels are cactus, so maybe a quick replacement set and give it a clean and turn it into a shop run bike.

Nice score. Is it the 27" version or the 650A version?familyguy wrote:Thread dredge for last nights score:

Mirrors are kinda cool, and do work once I turn them outward instead of inward.

I think so, based on measuring mine. Before I bent it - if anyone has a fork, please let me know.familyguy wrote:27". Which I believe rules out a 650B conversion due to canti post placement.
However fat 700C rims are becoming cheaper and there's lots of fat 622 tyres now. I'm struggling to find supple 630 tyres above 32mm (Panaracer Pasela is my current fave - the Contis 32x630 tyres I've tried measure 28mm on my rims)

My cantis have a degree of vertical adjustment but even with that I think it would take some "hairy" pad-post angles to reach 650B rims.familyguy wrote:Based on this pic, doesn't look promising:

VO Porteur bars / Shimano Exage Trail (BR-AT50) cantis / Shimano 105 (FC-1057) triple crank / Shimano 105 (RD-1056-GS) RD / Shimano Deore (FD-DE10) FD / Suntour stem shifters / CXP21 to basic hub wheels (came on the donor Trek I got for much of the drivetrain, could go at any moment if more suitable ones show up)
The reversed cross-levers will go soon, replacement being worked on. Then some grips and it's done (enough).

I like the resourceful mixing of bits to make an overall cycle which will be very capable.

Now with a front rack bag, random recovered (thanks be to metal epoxy) homemade rack & Velo Orange Decaleur and with a Topeak office bag (gutted) doing shirt-and-laptop duty at the back.

Thanks - certainly provides a baseline for anyone doing a full resto.
Shame they didn’t get the rack level for the photo !

Interesting. I wonder if there was a theory behind it, or whether that's just what the person with the spanner did.
Mine I got as a frame + fork + headset + bottom bracket, so I have no idea what stock looked like
