I have both a Diamondback Expert TG (same frame as yours, OS Tange Crmo) and a Tange 5 Ricardo. Although the Ricardo uses PG tubing, they are standard sized and I would choose it over the Diamondback any ride. The DB is just to stiff for me on the roads I ride. I prefer a frame with a more flexible top tube. I think a thinner standard size top tube with a decent set of compliant forks, instead of the ghastly uni crown ones it's adorned with, would make the DB a much better ride.
I think my take on smoothness is more the rolling feel of the hubs and the bottom bracket. I haven't ridden enough to start comparing how frames contribute. I'm sure that when I fit up the new GPX stuff the smoothness will be awesome!

Well I took the bike out for a ride yesterday. All went extremely well until I got a flat tyre. In all the kms I've ridden on this bike over the years, this was the first ever. It was so annoying. A new kevlar lined Schwalbe tyre, Mr Tuffy liner, and a new Tioga tube. How the heck did I get a flat? The tube decided to split along its seam that how!

A major bummer. I've been told to hunt down Maxxis tubes. very reliable I've been told. I'll be staying away from Tioga that's for sure.

The Suntour GPX group set is on its way. First part to arrive is the crankset. Looks fantastic!

What are you referring to? One of the bikes or the crankset?

Hi Rusty,

These shots were taken on the Amy Gillette bikeway. This section is behind the main road in Woodside.

The cranks, the 2 sets of GPX cranks i've had were both quite tatty, even then they look good but new and shiny is something else :) .

Hey, Im loving this thread!
Where are you guys getting your 27" tyres from? I have an 80's Bernie Jones that I have been running vee-line tyres on. They were the only brand I could find and I think they are made of chewing gum. Ive heard that Conti still do a 27", but LBS cant source them.
Also I have a couple of other old steel frame bikes waiting for restoration. I would like to source BB's for them, and recommendations?

Sorry Frostee but both bikes in this thread wear 700C tyres, so I can't help you with sources for 27'. I haven't changed BBs so again I'm no help. Glad that you are enjoying the thread though.

I use Panaracer Pasela's. They come in avariety of widths. There's plenty to be found on eBay. Just watch the shipping on some stores, some wont give you a discount for multiples. Other auctions will take a cheaper offer on their buy it now price too.

Just an update on the parts I've got coming for the bike:

White Fizik perforated bar tape
White Selle Italia Turbo saddle
Cateye computer and lights bundle
NOS Suntour GPX Brake levers & hoods
NOS Suntour GPX Brake calipers (thanks Singlespeedscott)
NOS Suntour GPX Hubs
Used Suntour GPX shifters
New spokes
New chain

Still looking for a good deal on NOS Suntour GPX derailleurs and also need to assess the condition of the bottom bracket and cassette.

Will post up photos when they arrive.

Cheers,

Mark

Hi all,

Pleased to say that the entire Suntour GPX groupset has been acquired. Brakes, brake levers and hoods, downtube shifters, chainrings and cranks, pedals, front and rear derailleurs and wheel hubs.

First step for the restoration will be lacing the new hubs into the Mavic rims. I'll be using new stainless steel spokes. I'll take photos of the whole process and post them up for those interested.

Cheers,

Mark

If you have a set of decals, I'm sure he can make a set the way you want.
