always a topic of debate! what makes something vintage/retro and what makes something modern!

i think the general gist of these neo-retro builds is putting a groupset on a frame what wasnt part of the original build era wise (not branded wise!)

I've done this twice now.

Fuji, 1979

Both were improvements over the old running gear in terms of operation, hence making them more ridable IMHO. I'm sure in time I'd get used to down tube shifters and only having 6 or 7 gears at the back again. The range of gearing is what makes modern stuff almost a no-brainer for anything other than period correct or true retrogrouch builds.

Nice. But I do prefer the Fuji in its original form.

The Fuji was a true frankenbuild. The 105 came off the C5, wheels came off the flat bar commuter, the bars came out of a box of bits, the seat came out of a leather scrap recovering exercise, the bar tape was wrapped onto its third set of bars, the cables were all leftover bits, the bidon cage is off my first ever road bike which has been in my spares collection since 1992.

Does look good Strydz. Kind of funny that your getting a frame from Holland, given it's the tallest nation in the world :)

Wow, what's the back story to obtaining both of those Peugeots in the same model and colour?

How do you find one rides in comparison to the other given you have both?

Seeing all these nice bikes is certainly encouraging me to hurry up and finish mine.

On a slightly different time-scale, but still appropriate, I feel...

My Slim Ward-built Satellite dates from around 1960, and was originally fitted with an SA 3-speed hub gear (missing when I got the bike), one fairly
cactus hand brake, and mainly steel accessories. However, the frame is a 'good-'un' and is original, so I decided to update it into a practical 'ride'
but figured anything too 'modern' would look too out-of-place.

It now runs gear from the late 70s/early 80s (600 Arabesque shifters & FD, Dura-Ace RD, Dia-Compe center-pull brakes and stem, etc. The cranks are
Sugino, bars are Nitto, levers and wheels are Weinemann. The only 'modern' item is the seat, it's from a Southern Star BSO but is very comfortable.

The bike has proven to be light, fast, handles and stops very well, is dead-reliable, and is a total joy to ride. So much so that it gets far more use
than most of my other machines, and is often used as my 'daily transport'. And it's kept another 'oldie' in regular use, rather than the rubbish-skip
(which was where it was headed).

And I still haven't come across another...

I don't care if it's a $20 Huffy or a $20k Colnago, as long as you're riding, and you're happy.

Not totally vintage, and also not mine:

There is a whole thread (massive) on bikeforums.net, "Retro Roadies with Brifters" or something similar, if you want inspiration.

In fairness, some of these were built to take 9/10 speed with 130mm rear ends and brifters/ergos.

Then you get something like this:

Finally completed the build!

Centurion Triathlon Master 'Tange 1' tubing with full Ultegra 10sp + Shimano RS80 wheels.

Took it for the first 30km ride today. It's very comfortable and maintains a speed that some would find hard to believe.

The 'Turbo' saddle might not be to everyones taste but it's the original one that came on the bike and possible the most comfortable I've ever experienced.

Nice work. Even looks good with the low spoke count wheels. Must be the tri background :)

Congrats. It turned out very nice.

Tange 1 does make for a well performing frame.

Cheers, v nice Olmo. I think that the Veloce works well and looks pretty good too, and comes in at a reasonable price.
