Thanks! I will be putting full mud guards and panniers for winter. Ordered some bottle mount clamps too. Had no luck finding a suitable front wheel for the original fork, hence I bought a new fork that will fit 700c with the correct spacing. Should serve me well for wet commutes.

I'm a bit sad. I bought a Repco Olympic 12 frameset for $40 to scab the forks. Now I find out they're only $45 new. Shame there's no specific specs on rake, and axle to crown, etc measurements.

Just discovered this thread looking for somewhere to post this new retro Felt TK4130.
Somehow I stumbled on this Felt and kept coming back to it. Destickered and photographed. To make it quickly street rideable have got a rear wheel with Sturmey Archer S2 Duomatic kickback from Cell Bikes coming, I'll need to find a 22 rear sprocket, use a front brake and new front wheel.

Bringing this unloved little'un over from the Bike Gallery, I got it used/new last year, flipped it to freewheel, changed bars/seat/chain, later added a front brake.
It's called Shawty by Create, brought here by a Korean student who had a wilder fixie with low front chopped bar, low 650c front rim shorter slammed fork, and high tail big deep aero 700c rear rim.

Hello all, my commuter hack! Its very rough and has been put together as cheaply as possible. But is working well and I probably do around 50-70km a week on it commuting.
Put this together for around $50. (except for the sram red front chainring which I stole off my brother). Had gears - but I binned those as they weren't working very well.

It used to be perfect for my old commute on the flat - but from my new places its much hillier so I might have to add a few teeth to the back.

New member here!

First bike I've owned since high school - 17 years ago! Loving the single speed, haven't given fixed gear a go yet. I'm a little worried about stacking.

My fixed gear started life as a $5 tip find as I was looking for a nice summer commuter to cruise on.

Image

Image

After having a spin on a mate's single speed commuter I thought 'why not give fixed gear a go'. It's a Shogun Sport and originally had a 5 speed freewheel on the back. So I used the angle grinder to cut off the larger chainring and swapped the freewheel out for a 17t track sprocket and blammo, my FG was born. I recentred the axel and redished the wheel, which then resulted in spokes being a tad too long, see attached pic. So because I wanted to do this on the cheap, I grabbed the grinder again and removed the excess spoke and took it for a ride. It lasted a few hundred km before one of the spokes let go. Fortunately for me, I had a spare set of 27" steel rims off a roadie I'd built up and swapped the spoke out and back on the road again (see how far we get this time...).

Image

Image

It's still running with the original steel wheelset, I will swap the spokes out for the correct length in the future and I really want to keep the 27" steel rims as long as I can. It's also still running with one of the original gumwall tyres it came with, which is bordering on needing replacement, but it's all good for the minute.

This has quickly become one of my favourite bikes, the fixed gear is a bit of a pain on some of the steeper hills, but the experience of riding FG is completely different to any other bike I have and is worth the extra uphill effort IMO!

Apologies for the poor quality last 2 pics, these are taken on a Samsung J1 mini and it has an absolute POS camera.

The total cost has been around $60 (excluding the new rear tyre as it was a spare).

Cheers,

Rob

Latest couple of snaps of my Hillbrick commuter SS, after I fitted 28mm Gatorskins the other week. Gotta say I prefer the 28s to the 25s it had, bit more cushiony and grippy over the crap and bumps each day. I ran the 25s at max psi of 120 whereas the 28s I'm running ~110psi.

May need to swap out the chainring soon as the Aarn maybe has taken some bendy damage but we'll see.

110 is a very hi pressure for 28mm tyres. How heavy are you? I weigh 77kg and run 80 rear and 60 front with 28's

singlespeedscott - I've just always run my tyres at high pressures, I seem to like the hard direct feel although it can be rough. Now I'm used to the harder feeling, I start to think I have a flat if pressure gets below 100psi haha I only weigh ~73kg. They do say recommended PSI is 95 so maybe I could try that? I mostly went for the 28s for the larger footprint more than anything.

Edit- well I've dropped them to 100psi for the ride home today. My crappy 'spare' floor pump at work is an Aldi one and it won't grab the valves very well so both tyres ended up going dead flat before I pumped them back up again. So i'll see how 100 goes and then try 95 perhaps next week.
