Not only do I have a small head, but I use a headrest.
This means finding a helmet that
- fits
- has a visor that can be persuaded to drop down far enough to be useful on a 'bent
and
- doesn't have a dial at neck level
is proving hard.
My venerable Aldi lid that ticks all the boxes is getting on rather and is these days a Bobby Dodger rather than actual protection. Which is OK as I am not convinced a helmet is a must have on a recumbent.
however I wouldn't mind something that fitted well and wasn't so tired.
What lids have people found that work with headrests and have visors?

Just to make sure head rests are neck rests they are to support the neck which in most cases most helmets will fit if your supporting your neck. Is this something your doing? I have found when using neck rests that making my own adding in adjust ability makes it allot easier to get around all helmet issues thus allowing you to choose your helmet of choice.

As I said, they have dials at neck level and so far every dial helmet I have tried has had the dial in the way of the headrest. (or neckrest if you prefer)}SkOrPn--7 wrote:Just to make sure head rests are neck rests they are to support the neck which in most cases most helmets will fit
This may not be so for people with big heads and/or long necks.
But it is so for me.

My helmet has dials as well but having a neck rest built to your needs makes it easy to change locations as too not interfere with your helmet or adjusting knobs. I don't know how much of a MacGyver you are but making your own will be the only solution to solve many of the issues your facing. My latest helmet has the dials in the top of the helmet made by Lazer.

A helmet with dials in that location may solve some of your issues.

The headrest fits fine, I have a very short neck to go with the short rest of me. Most men don't really realise how long the male neck is compared to women of the same height. A headrest that didn't interfere with the dial on most helmets would be about the diameter of a pencil.
I have a Lazer with dial on the top but it's a cool weather lid only. I have wondered about the Lazer Ultrax but worry that the back of head protection would be too low.

I guess the only move is to take your bent and visit some major bike stores that have a huge selection of helmets and start testing to see what hits the mark for you.zebee wrote:The headrest fits fine, I have a very short neck to go with the short rest of me. You don't need to look for a helmet with a visor that drops low enough, you don't need to even look for a helmet with a visor, just find a helmet that fits and doesn't have the neck dial issue then attach an aftermarket visor to it. And note that the visor doesn't have to hang low at all, if it sticks forward enough then the same result. So no narrow visors.zebee wrote:... finding a helmet that fits, has a visor that can be persuaded to drop down far enough to be useful on a 'bent and doesn't have a dial at neck level is proving hard.
For aftermarket visors you could hunt around in the MTB section of most online shops however most MTB visors are too narrow and too stiff, hard to mount even with industrial velcro. There's the Rezzo and other products from Da Brim, you might try the camping stores for other versions of slip-on shade or you might get lucky and find a Carbon Spider visor for sale. Or you could make you own as per Peter Heal's template on OzHPV.
