Certainly early morning is the best riding time in a Brisbane summer, however my experience is that as long you are moving there is generally enough airflow to avoid a meltdown.

However when you stop at lights or climb a long hill, it can get uncomfortably hot.

Don't forget the velo shell help to keep a lot of the direct sun off your body and helps to reduce the reflected heat from the road surface itself.

Compared to my trike, you certainly get more airflow on the trike, but you are also like a prawn on a barbie and can quickly burn in the sun- so like everything in life, it's all a compromise!

It wouldn't be too hard to rig up a solar powered fan with the array mounted on top of the velo shell over a small hole drilled for a wire run. Inside a fan mount and a dashboard switch. It may not be an air conditioner but it would keep some air moving.

12v 1.5w solar array - under $10 from HK
12v 1w computer fan (again under $10)
a diode
a capacitor
some wire,
a switch
and some good old silicon to seal it all up.
< $30 and around 300g (and somewhere to mount it)

I've rigged up a fan inside the velo (5V powered from the USB port) to blow some cool air over me whilst I had the racing hood on. The trouble is that all you are really doing is blowing hot humid air around which doesnt really help.

What you really need to do is get cool air from outside in and an exhaust to get the humid air out. This means cutting holes in the Velo shell which is a scary idea

A bonnet scoop like this on the top shell (above your legs/knees) would be ideal but that is a really scary large hole to cut ...

And let water in too?

There's a Bacchetta Corsa about to go off in a few hours time for under $400 so far. Like the previous bargain Bacchetta this one has 650C wheels.

Here's an interesting one, a folding SWB with electric drive on the rear wheel, pedalling on the front. I suppose that you can also consider it a 5-speed rear, 16-speed front, so an 80-speed bike.


PS not quite recumbent but for some reason Gumnut has a lot of people selling dynamo hubs and wheels lately, including a Shutter Precision PD-8. And geared hubs like the Alfine 8. Mostly in Adelaide and going fast.

Not on e-Bay / Gumtree just yet (will be over the Christmas break), but my wife's 20-20 TriSled Gizmo is up for sale, in good nick with original Schwalbe Marathons, stored under cover and ridden only occasionally by The Boss.
Trike is in Melbourne (Briar Hill), I'll get a couple of photos organised in due course!

Not sure if I should post this here but I noticed that someone in VIC has a conference bike for sale.

This could be perfect for 'running' committee meetings on.

And somewhere in NZ someone is selling a Swift folder that comes with a conversion kit to recumbent.

I think that the modification is mostly a plate welded onto the headtube for the recumbent boom to bolt onto. Pity that there's no pic of the bike as a bent.

How has this not shown up in my searches until now? What a bargain! A Windcheetah for twelve hundred bucks............

Early recumbent steel-framed bicycle with adjustable boom and handlebar angle. The bike would appear to suit a tall rider given the seat height. Make uncertain but looks to be at least similar to a RANS Rocket. Has a short wheelbase and 1.75” x 20” wheels with Tioga slick tyres although may need new tubes. Pedals not supplied. This recumbent in its present condition would be best regarded as a project bike. Apart from cosmetic attention particularly to areas of surface rust and general lubrication and adjustments the inner surface of the boom needs to be degreased before the bike can be used.
