Chopper trike (more pics up)

Postby Wild Turkey » Tue Mar 10, 2009 10:31 pm

I have so many bikes its not funny.

In this pic my trike is just slammed together for the fringe opening parade the other week. I will do a little more to it before the Mt Lofty downhill chopper run this Saturday.

It's a long story.....

From front to back. The front wheel is off of my Mongoose Hard Luck just to get it rolling. I am building up a 24 inch at the moment. The forks are 1998 Boxxer 151's. I have Hayes hydros for it but not fitted up yet. The head tube is cut out of a Haro BMX. The top tube is 2 x Huffy deploy's BMX's joined together.

I got 3 piece cranks from the another Haro. The seat stays are exhaust tubing. The rear kind of chain stays are (get this) from an old futon lounge I found in a bin. It has a WTB rear MTB hub as an 8 speed gear box. Driving a proper differential via a second chain. So both wheels drive. Rare for a trike.

I plan to paint the frame, fork and rear axle in matt army green. Everything else stays black.

I had all XTR for the gear box but the long cage is too close to the ground.

The handle bars have been changed since the pic. I will probably fit another 6 bars before I'm happy. The seat pole is getting bent too this week, for extra lay back.

There is so much more to it but I won't go on.

This is the kind of thing you will see at the Mt Lofty lookout on saturday.

Everybody is well keen to help new commers out with ideas, parts and advice.

Damn, that's pure evil on three wheels, me like! :D

Sounds like good engineering too, 1500/10 for style and quality.

Cheers boys. I must say, I only had it out once and it draws quite a crowd.

I kind of don't get that excited about it after looking at it over the 6 months that it took to find enough crap to weld together.

Best thing to happen to 2 huffys but.

Ok I should get up some better pics. Infact I will get some video up after saturday. 10 km downhill from Mt Lofty to the city on a wide open disused freeway with 30 other tweekers. Oh yeah!!!

Yep, thats a diff alright, sun gears, spider gears the whole lot. 2 wheel drive. Quite rare for a trike. Corners like its on rails.

Concidering the massive rake up front. It turns a very tight circle. Not to mention the super smooth ride with sealed roller bearings on all wheels.

One draw back here with the in board rear disc / diff. Corner hard and brake at the same time and the inside wheel locks if you don't lean your weight in. The other wheel runs free.

Mind you the front 8 inch hydraulic should do alot of the work when I get the time to bleed it up.

Nice to know they's good for something more than taking up space at the tip.

As dodgy as huffys are.....

When it comes to cutting up bikes for custom rigs...

Mark my words.....

Nobody bends tube like huffy. They turn out some awsome profiles and hard rubbish piles are littered with them. A good combination in my books.

They have been building bikes since the 1800s. Not to mention winning gold at the olympics in the 80s. The most collectable of all, the Huffy radio bike. Worth mega bucks now days.

Ok my trike won't be at the next olympics, but it wont be in the hard rubbish again.

Very nice, I particularly like how the deep section top tube sweeps forward.

Well done, 8) a smooth lookin ride thats sure to appeal.(No stubbie holder?) Whats great is that there are bods out there that want to create and experiment, and not just the buy it off the shelf mentality. This type of thinking/work gave us the hotrods /choppers set of the 50's that are now of legend. Jay here of Kippax does some great work too,and i will try and get some pics.

This thing is insane! I really need to learn how to weld so I can build up crazy contraptions like these.

Would love to see the Mt. Lofty videos you mentioned earlier.
